Uhura trailer released

Ha! Looking at pictures of me 10 years ago, vs now, and I definitely see a difference.

Probably not that drastic, but this is make believe on a pretend starship. At some point in time we are going to have to pretend. Unless Saavik is completely different?

Point taken with Saavik but that was just really unfortunate they couldn't get Kirstie Alley back for Star Trek 3 or that they couldn't have the actress and character return for Star Trek 6 and instead substituted her with Valeris. I'm sure both movies could have potentially been better with the original actress. Oh well.

Of course, this is one of the many issues you can run into when you try to do prequels. It can be done but takes some impressive casting. For example, Robert De Niro in Godfather Part 2 as a younger version of the Don. If they got that one wrong, the movie would not be considered nearly as great as it is today.

Three different women played Tora Ziyal on Deep Space 9 that didn’t look or sound the same, even under a whole lot of Cardassian makeup and prosthetics, so it’s a Star Trek tradition.

Celia Rose Gooding looks like she’s going to do a fantastic job playing Uhura, who is not meant to be the sum of a set of facial features, or a voice quality, but an entire character.

I will take your word for it.

It is unfortunate, but that's the real world. I am not in favor of CGIing past actors to look younger for a whole season. That strikes me a waste of money, and really basically short changes current actors because they can't look like the past. If we can handle make up changes, recasting, or same actor different characters, is a new Uhura that big of a pill to swallow?

Perhaps, for some, it is. Mileage will vary as to when it breaks down.

I really don't see it. I mean this show takes place only 10 years before TOS so the change in appearance shouldn't be so drastic.

It's the hair, which being 10 years earlier, it would be unrealistic if it was the same. Anybody want to photoshop Nichelles's hair on her?

He'll take a look at that hair style used for Lieutenant Uhura in the last the last season of TOS Circa 1968 / 69 compared to how the characters hair looked in 1979 10 years later in ST:TMP:

In terms of looking like Nichelle Nichols, I may give Zoe for face and Celia for body type.

In the first two JJ Films ,while I felt Zoe Saldana was beautiful , she always looked quite skinny to me to play the role for Uhura. Almost like Gal Gadot not having the body type for Wonder Woman.

TOS Uhura (Nichelle Nichols)was very curvy. Zoe was part of that size zero Hollywood era of actresses. she looked her best to me in star trek beyond as she did not look as thin as the first two movies.

The only issue I have with this new Uhura from strange new world is that she looks too tom boyish and masculine. While the Uhura from the JJ films and TOS were very feminine.

Of all the TOS Female characters, it was Janice Rand I felt gave the best tom boy masculine vibe.

Her delivery of the last line in that trailer sounds incredibly like Nichols. Her voicing is more contemporary, as is the case with most of the actors.

Deepfakes seem to work best on characters with limited screen time. That will no doubt change.

It had nothing to do with that. Gene didn't believe Saavik would do what Valeris was to do in the movie, that's why she was replaced.

According to whom?

Per both of the co-writers - Denny Martin Flinn (in The Fifty Year Mission) and Nicholas Meyer (in The View from the Bridge) - it was because they tried and failed to get Kirstie Alley to reprise her role.

Yep, it was Meyer.

GR had no real influence on the making of the later movies. They listened and then did what they wanted.
