Looks like that one shot is based off this fan model

The Cargo/fuel pods look very similar.

It just occurred to me that the Klingons are probably the only race the Fed can portray as villains in a simulation even after they made peace with them. The Klingons probably consider it a great honor that they're portrayed as an invincible, unbeatable warrior empire in the Kobayashi Maru.

I'm just glad to have her back in Trek, want to see her in live action in Picard too now.
i’d love that, especially if you consider her relationship with Picard (did they got together? Did they marry? Did they got divorced?).

To my knowledge, the most successful instance of an older actor voicing his younger self in recent times happened with Mark Hamill as Luke, and he's an extremely seasoned voice actor with a lot of practice.
true, he’s one of the few that can pull it off.

Also the threat that was passingly mentioned of Gwyn's dad coming after them (and thus the need to go to the Federation for protection) seems very remote. The Protostar jumped 4,000 light years. Gwyn's dad doesn't have that kind of tech. It would be like Voyager in the Delta Quadrant worrying about the Tal Shiar.
that sounded odd to me as well, but it’s in character: those are kids, they might understand they are now very far from where they where, but not think of the implications, including that the probability of the Diviner finding them again are basically zero...Unless they go back for some reason (rescuing the other prisoners, for example), which sounds like the logical path to bring the show on eventually.

even Neelix is just as capable of being captain as anyone else
Technically speaking Neelix *is* a captain.

My big question is 4,000 ly in what direction from where they last were?
towards the gamma quadrant, if you look at the map. Not sure they got into it, though.

They even kept the injokes on the LCARS panels

love it!

WOW. A clip show. Star Trek Prodigy and Lower Decks are now competing for who has the most references and memberberries.
Wasn't this show supposed to attract new people to Star Trek?

I enjoyed it! I will say though, it would have been nice to get an Enterprise character - maybe Hoshi or Trip. Even if it's not as popular as the other shows, it would have been cool if all pre-Disco Trek were represented.

I have to say, I do find Dal a little grating, but I still dig the show.

Apparently they're not in the Gamma Q, which I also though they were in:

"I don’t know if they’re actually in the Gamma Quadrant, but they are–gosh, how do I say this without spoiling anything?–they were going towards the Gamma Quadrant. I can tell you definitively that Tars Lamora is on the border of the Delta Quadrant and the Beta Quadrant. So they were kind of going along the border, if that makes sense, riding the border between the Delta and Beta Quadrants, toward the galactic center."

The Kobayashi Maru was playable in the old 1990s Starfleet Academy game (and its console ports) and recently a browser based version was made available too. Specifically for the browser version which I don't have much experience with, are any of Dal's unorthodox tactics actually possible to attempt? :O
SFA had the options to make your ship stronger, the enemies weaker, or have them fear you personally, and the last option let you win. The browser game had a very complex solution that I can't fully remember XD

Doing a few successful feats or having an occasional observation doesn't make for a leadership role. If that were the case, even Neelix is just as capable of being captain as anyone else. Dal's actions haven't warranted the position imo. And the character's actor is not compelling enough to convey Dal as having the strength of personality to be a believable natural leader.
Nobody made him captain, he took that role himself. Now he's learning...

I believe so but I'm just really curious in what context holo-Odo would need to change shape in the Kobayashi Maru. Did Dal try to make Odo impersonate a Klingon?
(Attempt 47)
Dal: Who are you people anyway?
Odo: I'm a shape-shifter who sleeps as goo in a bucket...
Dal: Ok, jelly man.
If they need a captain, the writers should give a reason why it should be Dal. I don't think I need to be able to come up with an alternative to say I don't really buy his leadership.
That's the point of his arc.
Funny, I look at Dal and think "oooooooohhhh, this is that complaint people make about Mariner -- only actually accurate in this case" :bolian:

Sooooo much of that is the acting, BTW. Tawny Newsome has line reading after line reading that she delivers with some brilliant sideways spin that is completely unexpected yet also makes total perfect sense, and is funny but also truthful. She's like a Parker Posey. I can't help but get excited by a performance that is that nimble and deft and real. I literally find it exciting just to hear what her instincts came up with whenever that character opens her mouth.

Meanwhile, Brett Gray is saying the words. There's just not nearly as much there. (Which is maybe appropriate for a kids show? But he does strike me as notably flat compared to his 8 Prodigy co-stars as well)

I agree that there is no obvious candidate for captain (though Gwyn seems like a more obvious captain-in-waiting, once she's properly completed her Trek Redemption Arc), which is fine, at this point it doesn't seem there has to be. There is an interesting story in them figuring out how to function as a crew without an initial obvious leader. I also think Dal could function fine as one character among an ensemble of equals, or as a supporting character to some other lead.

It's when the show is centering him as THE lead that the trouble starts. I just haven't seen any justification for that yet in the actual writing or performance.

Maybe next week, though! I live in hope.
Do you want people to be at the end of their arc after 6 out of 20 episodes? There needs to be room for character development, right?

Somewhat OT, but I feel the need to declare how much I hate, hate, hate the "skip" feature that Paramount+ has recently added to the intros of their series. It's distracting and obtrusive and even obscures some of the names in the opening credits, which I'd go so far as to say feels rather disrespectful to the people who work on the show. I mean, it is at least partially transparent when watching the service on the computer, but watching on the TV via my Roku, all I can see is that Kate Mulgrew is apparently playing someone called "Hologram Janev." I realize I probably sound like I'm making a mountain out of a molehill, but I was so annoyed when I saw that "skip" button pop up, it kind of ruined the whole episode for me.

They have a skip feature now? About time.
Now if only they get rid of the auto play feature. It keeps trying to put on Picard every time a Discovery episode finishes. At least put on one of the decent Star Trek shows.
Rugrats for when I watch Prodigy which makes me laugh.

No and sure, but I don't think these questions really relate to my critique. I'm saying I don't find this characters journey to work because of failures in the writing and performance, not that that journey should be done or somehow further along.

Though more and more I'm wondering, is this intentional? Is that what you desire at the center of your kids show -- the most blank character, so that the young audience can more easily project themselves into it?

This is how I felt when an Enterprise character didn't show up on the holodeck - that's not my favorite Trek show, or even top three, but I saw characters from the other shows and just expected to see some ENT rep and was disappointed when it didn't happen.

What's really annoying is when I watch Frasier. At the end of each episode, during the credits, there's an extra humorous scene with no dialogue while the outro music plays. But Paramount always tries to skip past this scene, minimizing it and showing a still from the next episode. You have to click on the minimized part within five seconds or it skips to the next episode.

it's very small and on the side in chrome and firefox - why not watch there if that ruins such a brilliant episode for you...

The minimizing when you hit pause is very annoying, though. Trying to get good screencaps is really hard, but sometimes it randomly doesn't minimize...

This gets my first 10 out of all the new Trek. This show, aimed at children, feels like Star Trek. It was just a good solid half hour of sci-fi fun and entertainment. The call backs and cameos were on point. Dal had some great character development. The ongoing mystery gets some reveal and some more deepening. I was impressed. Well done!

This interview also clarifies why Janeway didn't recommend the transporter in Episode 5. She mentioned thoron radiation which interferes with sensors and transporters.

I assume the hologram thought they'd know that so she didn't bother explaining.

I get where they're going now, the ship is going South-West from a Top-Down 2-D planar perspective.

And they're skirting by the edge of the "Gamma Quadrant towards the Galactic Center.

Has there been much depiction of the ACTUAL Galactic Center & the SMBH, or is any depiction of that area around the edge of it like what happened with Sybok?

Soooo many winks and nods to previous Trek scenarios (and the number 42). Between watching the various outcomes of the Kobayashi Maru itself, and seeing our favorite characters from Treks long past again (and getting a few tears from me at the dedication), that would have been enough to call it a good episode, but we also got a little more information on the Protostar, and its history, as well as the history of Gwyn and her father, the last of their species, apparently.

This one was well done, and I am certainly warming to this series. I gave it a 7/10. Very well done.
