General Computer Thread

I've heard a musician/restorer of analog synths talk about restoring old analog synths, seems they are REALLY hard to get right, you have to do everything right even making sure that you use the exact same solder as back when that thing was built else something will be off and the synth won't sound the same.:shifty:

I expect any changes in resistance would alter the characteristics of oscillators, filters, and timers. However, all analogue electronic circuits are going to change over time. Analogue synths are notorious for going out of tune anyway. You have to retune them quite often.

Groan I know a lot of you dislike Windows but can anyone help with a minor issue.
Whenever I start MS solitaire collection it always has to have to or three goes to sign into xbox.... I can't seem to resolve the issue that is causing the error.

Might be a certificate issue, might be a corrupt registry. You can go into the control panel, apps, and then click "advanced" on Microsoft Solitaire Collection," and reset the app. That should take care of it. I'm pretty sure you'll lose progress on current games, but it should retain everything else.

I've uninstalled and will reinstall, see how that goes. As of 15 minutes ago no more xbox popup and no more error messages. I did have it written down but can't find the slip of paper and the error was related to xbox game bar which syncs progress across games.

I hope it works for you. Microsoft can be awfully testy sometimes when it has no reason to be.

Yeah, according to Jean-Michel Jarre analogs are now and then a pretty handful, the oldest he's got are a Moog Modular IIIC and 55, an ARP 2500 and a bunch of 2600's and in an interview he's said about them that on some days they pretty much refuse to produce anything usefull.
Also they do NOT like temperature changes, at a concert someone opened a window and every synth he had went out of tune..

A case in point - Ozzy Osbourne versus the ARP 2600:

Korg has recently released a new version of the 2600 which give the sound of the original (including being able to do a certain Astromech droid :) with out being a temperamental.

some of the sounds in the opening of Tangerine Dream's Phaedra came about cos the damn Moogs wouldn't say in tune and $deity knows how Keith Emerson managed with them on tour in the early days.

Though if you want a good video of analogue synths including an 2600, Jarre's Oygene in Your Living room is the answer.

Thanks for the advice about the synth. It's an EMU Proteus MPS Orchestral made in 1991 and I bought it in 2006. This is an image of my keyboard showing the yellow battery which I've seen for sale on websites so this is why I'm wondering if it's worth trying it to see if it gives the synth a new lease of life. The circuit board is only very small and doesn't stretch the entire length of the casing. I've never soldered before but I have guitarist friends who would have no problem doing it and if it worked I would then give it a full clean. I've had a good innings with it but will be sad when I have to throw it away especially as it's the Orchestral version which has hundreds of digitally recorded presets. Maybe reseating the ribbon cables is also worth doing but given the symptoms and how they have been progressive I'm convinced it's due to a failing brain which could possibly be fixed by replacing that yellow battery. This is only the second time I've opened the casing since I bought it because I was afraid of causing damage but I can't do much more damage to it now.

Yes, that battery has to go ASAP, those were used in computers too, when they're dead they'll start to leak and the acid will damage the circuit board.

A better look at the board.

But definately check the battery. There's many a vintage MacIntosh that's gone to silicon heaven cos the battery gooed.

Could possible snip the battery about halfway up the wire and then use that as the point to wire in a replacement which would be easier than doing to a the circuit board level but still getting some-one who have experience would be your best option (check your local musical instrument shop if they do repairs).

So I'm slowly gathering parts that are sitting around, if I'm correct I should be able to build a third Socket A machine, I've got a Duron 750 and the Athlon machine and I've found a board that I was given a few years ago, I packed that one away and didn't really look at it again, came accross it a week ago and it's an ASUS board, made in 2003 and it is quite nice actually, found the drivers and the latest BIOS and the like, I've got a few Socket A Semprons which are just a little slower than the Athlon, they seem to be supported by the board in any case, so now I need to see what casing to use and where the hell my Socket A heatsinks are hiding out..
