The pacing, time and distance weren't as jumpy in this one as the pilot, so I think it's the stronger of the two so far. A good exploration of the Protostar.

    A few highlights from me:

+ Kinda tragic to imply that Rok-Tahk's lived her entire life in the prison camp. Food rations are all she knows.

+ Dal's refusal to go to the Federation for aid is a tantalizing mystery. Theres a backstory here fueling the beliefs that he has, I wonder what it is.

+ Pity we didn't get a good look at the shuttle intact, but it looks like the Protostar prints up a 'shuttle sled', not a full shuttlecraft.

+ I'd like to freeze frame the captain's quarters when I can to see if theres any evidence of the Captain's identity. The protostar interestingly lacks any evidence of a crew that suddenly evacuated. So...what happened?

+ Murph looks pretty cozy in the Captain's seat. Do we have anything in trek of humanoids being converted to goo monsters? I have this strange guess that Murph is the Protostar's captain that got transformed. Kinda like what happened to the science team in "Realm of Fear."

Soooo much exposition, and some of it dealing with procedure was weird. Never seen power needs cause brig cells to open allowing prisoners to run free. Thought that only happens in Arkham . ;) I suppose it matters little in an imminent death situation but it still seems silly. Perhaps a return to bars on brigs instead of force fields.

Enough with the Federation propaganda speech, please.

Otherwise a fun, action packed, character infused romp. 7

Yes, sometimes the computer is kinda stupid. Remember with Burnham when she was trapped in the brig. Well, at first it protected her against being blown out in space but then the computer wouldn't let her go regardless of imminent death. You'd think a clever computer would think of a way to save the person in the brig when something like that happens.

Yep, Chalk it up to another 'speed of plot' trope and move on, I suppose.

It's like a ship named Enterprise being the only starship within range to respond to a major crisis. It makes no sense when you stop and think about it but for the convenience of the plot, there you are.

I viewed it as them being inexperienced at running a starship during emergencies. So when they divert power, they do it without checking what they're diverting from.

You'd think that the computer would give a warning before cutting off power to the brig. In case there's someone dangerous there...

    Agreed.

You assume Dal knows what the Federation is like; and his point is well taken in that I doubt the Federation authorities are going to look kindly at a group of kids 'joyriding' in a prototype Federation starship. Yeah, I'm sure they'll (the Starfleet Brass) will buy the "We just found it...it was 100% empty - no sign of the crew... " too.

Based on what we know of their lives so far, the older ones would have no reason to trust any authority figure.

Exactly. "The Federation" sounds super friendly...to us. It isn't to them.

Well, too late, the creators have said there is one, and it's not connected to why the Protostar is in the Delta Quadrant.
