Yep. Which would have happened not all that long before "Where No Man Has Gone Before(TOS)." If the writers can't honor this obvious piece of continuity then they need to promote Pike to Fleet Captain by 2260 just to make their decision fit. Hopefully they can restrain themselves.

 

Oh, come on. That's an easy one. Trek promotes and demotes characters whenever they want, for story purposes.

Pike will be temporarily promoted to Fleet Captain for a mission away from the Enterprise next season. Kirk will serve under him. Later, Kirk will be assigned to the Enterorise.

There's nothing to stop them.

 

You’re right, of course. I just wanted to put James R. in a scene with the unnamed interlocutor, whom I want to believe is José Mendez (even though it’s clear he hadn’t met Spock before “The Menagerie.” Unless, of course, they were playing by Moscow rules. I contain multitudes. So sue me.)

 

They should do a episode about health care were old Phlox, Bones, Boyce, Piper, M'Benga and Nurse Chapel all come together in one episode. Of course the dumb but fun idea is they all come together to resurrect Trip from being dead. They have the technology and seems he wanted to be frozen should he die someday in hopes of a future cure.

 

The Five Doctors? I presume there would need to be time travel involved.

And it was news of sorts. That is, Una needs to mention his name to Pike in the conversation, rather than speak of "the Chief" or whatever, and Pike has to comment on his personality as if this were of news value to Number One. And the ship apparently crashed because of something Louvier warned Pike of, and crashed recently. Odds would seem to be Louvier is the new guy, perhaps the first one who has the guts to tell Pike that his holograms suck.

So if there's a different Chief Engineer there in SNW, either before or after DIS season 2, it's not much of a surprise.

(To nitpick, it was "Chief Louvier", rather than "Chief Engineer Louvier". Might be Chief of Holocomms for all we care...)

You know what I want from one of these new era shows? Calm. Boringness. I don't like that JJ Abrams thing where everything needs to be exciting and talked about. It's my main DIscovery complaint, they give orders out and then we have to have a running commentary or quips about it. I want calm and boring, because that's what a professional would do when given orders.

 

Doesn't make for entertaining television though, does it?

 

I have confidence that they can. They have a great lead in Mount.

 

A great lead and great writing are two different things but I hope you're right.

 

Might have been fairly long before. After all, Kirk would be quite entitled to first specify when he first came to meet Pike (the promotion), and then to remind Mendez who he's talking to ("I got the bloody ship from him!"), even if there was a full decade between the events.

It's external factors that might support a later date for the promotion. Or then "Fleet Captain" is the very rank Kirk and Pike both are sporting when wearing the |:| braid, and there is no promotion due.

Of course, Pike only wore || in "The Cage" originally, and Una was explicitly a mere Lieutenant. So they're playing fast and loose with ranks anyway in the short where Spock supposedly first comes aboard. SNW is unlikely to be any improvement in that respect.

Yes and no. When you have a great lead you can trust them to carry the show, versus relying on writing tricks.

Honestly the way the dialogue is worded, Kirk can have met Pike a bunch of times, just one of them has to be when Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain.

 

I do wonder though, with 9 "main" characters....and assuming they stick to the ~10-15 episodes per season formula the rest of modern Trek is...how much development can we really expect for each character, especially those outside of the Pike-Spock-Una triad?

I really hope they will give each character at least some focus, and not end like TOS where, in 3 seasons we, for example, never had an Uhura episode. Because...really, why bring in an underdeveloped legacy character, just to shove her into the background again?

 

I hope that they explore Spock and Uhura. We know the pairing happened in an alternate universe, and there was some definite chemistry between the two of them in the early episodes of the original series, particularly Charlie X and The Man Trap.

Also, with Christine Chapel along, we can trace the beginning of her feelings for Spock as well. When she confessed her feelings to him in The Naked Time, she obviously had a crush on him for a long time. We can see how this begins. Strange New Worlds will be set approximately three years before Chapel's fiance disappears.

 

I agree I don't want Uhura turned into the next Bryce/Rhys/Detmer/Nilsson kind of thing where they're just cardboard extras. At the same time, it's going to be depressing seeing Uhura saving the day in Strange New Worlds and all the characters gushing about how she'll make Captain in 5 years or whatever, knowing full well she's going to stay as a communications officer on the same ship for the next 30 years.

 

I'd be fine with it being the Pike/Una/Spock Hour.
