They clearly do care if you watch any of the BTS materials and read/listen to interviews.

And, I mean, not once did I ever flip out over the retcon/redesign/whatever the hell you want to call it of the Enterprise.

Look, I love TOS as much as the next person, but, I truly didn't want to see an exact duplicate of the interior as it appeared on that show. I absolutely love what they did with it. It's modernized, yes, but, I look at the bridge and can tell that IS the b ridge of the USS Enterprise. I also absolutely love the exterior redesign too. It really looks like it's been brought more in line with the design lineage of the Enterprise from the past and the ones that come later. I don't think it violates any continuity; I think it looks more in-line with it, design-wise.

Yeah, because it’s impossible to care “like the fans” when there isn’t a monolithic way fans care. There are as many ways “the fans” care as there are individual fans.

Yup, but it is in vogue to treat the production team as bastards who don't give a :censored: about past Trek.

Oh my god that is so true. :)

One would hope that's not going to happen, but you know it probably will. The very people who it's aimed at will most likely still not like it.

I know my only real reservation (if you can even call it that) about Strange New Worlds is that it's going to be episodic. Of course, it remains to be seen what exactly episodic means for this show. With talk of emotional serialization, and two-parters, and larger plot arcs, and considering the seasons will probably only be 10 episodes long give or take, then what are we talking about here. How really different is that than what they're already doing now?

I suppose instead of the plot taking up the entire season, it'll be for three or four episodes or something?

There's also the "prequel" thing. Being set before everything you can only do so much before you start breaking stuff. I like to joke that it can't be too "strange" and too "new." So that could become a potential problem, because it could be kind of boring because they may not be able to do much of anything.

I'm sure I'll like it though, because I already like Spock and Number One. And it will most assuredly have some connection to Discovery because how can it not?

Speaking of which, I didn't pay attention to the reaction of Spock. Is he not liked by some, or is it neutral or what? He's my favorite Spock ever, so I'm good. But I have no idea what the general consensus is...

Ultimately though, and again even though I'm sure I will like it, but I don't think the show should have been made either. If they wanted to do a planet-of-the-week episodic show where they go exploring and whatever, then just set it during the same time as Discovery, set it in the 31st century. Then you won't have to worry about the "prequel" thing, and you won't have to worry about pissing anyone off about Spock. You can have everything you want and none of the potential headaches. And you can have one of those cool-a** 31st century ships too, with the programmable matter and the whole nine.

Yeah, a human-looking alien is fine.

I guess the only thing with that is any alien in Star Trek, human-looking or non-human... they're really not all that interesting to me.

Well, Vulcans and Romulans I like, but you can only do that so many times. And it would be kind of cool to me if Babs Olusanmokun played a Romulan (and is a Romulan as a member of the crew); he looks kind of Romulan already...

...but that of course would be breaking all kinds of things so you can't do that. If you set in the 31st century though you could easily do it. :)

No, I'd just prefer human though because I'd be curious what kind of background they would come up with. They could go with the Master of Brazilian jiu-jitsu thing if they wanted to and actually have that as part of his character in the show.

Then again, it may not make any difference anyway, because there may not be much of any character development because the show is going to be episodic. :)

Oh, and I can hear the complaints now. Of course, Alex Kurtzman would say, "Well f*ck, you wanted episodic so I gave you episodic. What, now you want character development and episodic? What else you want? Are there too many women in the cast, you want me to get rid of a couple of them?"

Never listen to the fans, and always listen to the fans.
(Yeah, I don't know what I mean by that either... )

    EDIT:
Joking aside, I did just notice that. There's going to be a lot of women on this show. This is going to be right up there with Discovery in that aspect.

    Interesting and cool.

Neutral. They kept their ire on Burnham, Tilly, and Georgiou. Basically, characters with breasts. No, I don't think that's a coincidence IMO, given how much they like Kirk/NuKirk, Barclay, and Dukat/Garak/Damar & Mirror Spock... but that's a whole other topic.

The worst they said about this version of Spock was he didn't really look like Leonard Nimoy, "the beard hides a lot" (meaning it hid a lot of difference), and for that reason they preferred this Spock with a beard, even though at first a lot of them were like "Spock has a beard?!" I made a post in response to that saying, "Most of you probably have beards yourselves!" Ironically, I've never grown a beard in my life. So I'm not a beard person. But I like Bearded Spock.

The response to Ethan Peck has been overwhelmingly positive on social media.

Peck has the right voice and right face for a younger version of Spock Prime. The casting was excellent.

It's funny. When Zachary Quinto was first cast as Spock, I was struck by how much he reminded me of Leonard Nimoy. When Ethan Peck was first cast as Spock, I was struck by how much he reminded me of Zachary Quinto.

I think I like Peck about as much as I do Quinto at this point.

Which is to say, they're both excellent.

Peck's voice helps sell the performance. You can never duplicate Nimoy's tone of voice but then you don't need to. But Peck makes his younger Spock feel more like Nimoy's.

Peck is a more original choice than Quinto. They really strove to match Nimoy as closely as they could in that first reboot movie.

I'm going to be real interested in how Mister Speck develops. They could choose to make him more of a protegee to Una than to Pike.

When Springsteen first made it big, people endlessly compared him to Dylan.

Years later, people endlessly called the Wallflower's "One Headlight" a Springsteen knock off.
