Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I can only imagine how much the TNG fans would have streamed if they changed anything with respect to the 1701-D In the opening dream flashback shot of the first episode of 'Picard';

Wasn't 10-Forward shifted a couple windows from the center?

Oh, also, as I recall the shuttle bay doors on the neck were the wrong size.

I am still outraged....

So yeah Alex Kurtzman and Co. for the most part really like TNG, But seem to find TOS 'dated' to the point it really needs a visual upgrade. I'll be honest and say I don't agree with that attitude but that's who we have running the franchise at the moment.
I guess it's because of the Kelvin movies he worked on before

I've long said my preference would be if they left the shapes and dimensions of everything the same and just added surface detail. Like skinning a 3d model with new textures, but in real life.
That's what I would prefer as well. Kinda like the sequel to a PC game that has better graphics a few years later, but otherwise stays the same.

There are other bars or lounges along the edge of the saucer, but it should've been a smaller room. But it was a dream anyway.

I'm surprised no one raised an issue with the straight nacelle pylons on the clapboard....
When the first clapboard pics appeared, I recall discussion that it was generic art from Google not made especially for SNW. Pretty sure I have a tshirt somewhere with it on, with the rainbow warp streak which I got about 6 years ago.

Frankly one of the major differences between TOS and even TNG and now are the sizes of the sets. Back then everything was very small, tight, and now the sky is the limit. Especially if they use those green screen sets or the one that was used for Mandalorian.

Kurtzman already said they are getting Mandalorian AR walls for Trek.

Figuring that shows filming in Vancouver for, say, Berlanti/DC/WB won't be far behind the Toronto-filming shows for Trek and the like.

That's what happens when you go to widescreen motion picture format and high definition. In the '60s and even the '90s it was still on the small screen at 480P standard resolution. You could get away with a lot less detail and simpler sets.

With how they're filming things now that's no longer an option. Any flaws in set design are going to be totally on display in 4K high definition on large 60+ inch screens.

Wasn't that an issue they ran into when remaking TNG for Blu-ray? The significantly higher resolution exposed flaws in the sets that people couldn't see on TV in the 80s and 90s.

It was the same for the TOS blu-Rays. In some shots of TOS S2 "The Trouble With Tribbles" You can clearly see Leonard Nimoy walking down the corridor sets of the Enterprise in a coffee-stained costume. Yes they tried to clean it, and they knew that with 1960s TV resolution no one would be able to make out the stains. When they rescanned the film for the new high definition Blu-Ray masters; You can make out the fact that Leonard Nimoy's costume tunic has coffee stains on it In a number of shots.

That's visible in "...Tribble-ations."

Given the nature of velour it's a near-miracle most of the Season 1 and 2 uniform shirts weren't the size of Barbie doll clothing by the end of each year.

First Bluray (of an old movie) I ever bought was Ghostbusters. When they battle Gozer at the end, I couldn't believe the detail. Unfortunately it exposed tons of set dressings like clear plastic sheets that were used, that kind of ruins the experience. I hope they "fixed" that in subsequent releases, but I never checked. That's something where I don't think it was visible even on a 35mm print shown in theaters, but simple scanning that they did in 2009 had that stuff show up.

I remember when Blu-ray was new and one of the taglines for it was "it makes you feel like you're there." Which is sort of true, in that many times it can make you feel like you're there on the soundstage as it's being filmed.
