Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Matte that floor or carpet it. The shininess of the DSC Enterprise bridge is its worst quality. There needing to be Red Alert bars running through half the surfaces of the room being the next worse. All you need are the helm console light and one other near the turbolift.

For the carpeting, I wouldn’t mind if they just did the lower level, between the railing and the helm platform. Maybe a nice dark or mid gray. That alone would make a big difference. (Then they could keep their light circle on the upper level floor.)

I hope that the Enterprise will get it's own corridor sets, and it wont be a back and forth re-dress of Discovery's.

I also wonder if we will get another bridge set made, that can be used for other starships in the future.

They're not filming in the same place as Discovery IIRC, (still Toronto, but not in the same area) so I doubt it.

That would be too much work to keep redressing, especially since they're filming both shows at the same time. And with Covid percautions needing to keep the different teams separate, yeah.

I guess I assumed they Bridge set they built would still be standing - and they will both be using the large AR set as well as being in the same facility of Pinewood Toronto.

I think CBS brought out most of the soundstages for Trek production, so they could have either re-located the Bridge set, or they just build their additional standing sets in another place. 20 miles is a fair distance away for CBS Stages Canada, so it would probably be easier to dismantle and relocate.

For the Discovery season 2 shoot, they re-dressed the Discovery corridors and sets, except for the Bridge

.

Disco is filmed at Pinewood Studios Toronto in the Port Lands (east of downtown, west of the Beaches), while SNW is being filmed at CBS Stages Canada in Mississauga. So, they're about 30ish km apart. Both are well within reasonable commuting distance for the actors (well, except for Toronto traffic...).

On edit: didn't see the post right above mine!

Yeah, but they're filming both shows at the same time, it wouldn't be convenient.

Honestly, I hope they shrink it down a little bit, it is huge. There was a bit of intimacy in the TOS bridge that I think is lost with the update. It also wouldn't hurt to cut back on some of the lighting.

There is the 4:3 to 16:9/2:1 ratio to consider, as well as the Anamorphic lenses they use. All of these choices will determine how large to make the set, what kind of focusing you wish to pull or use.

The right shot, with the right DoF, will make the space between actors more or less "intimate" or close

I think the revamped Enterprise bridge is a perfect homage to the TOS one that is marketed to a 21st century audience. They couldn't get it any closer if they tried. Did you watch that video? If not, do so. They went so far as to incorporate as much of the TOS aesthetic as they could -- the jewelled buttons, the 1960s "lamps", all the trinkets on Spock's console (including the black and white wavy thing), the wood trim on the Captain's chair, etc....

And I also like that they added a second door to the bridge, bringing it more in line with the refit.

The overhead lighting on the DSC Enterprise bridge is just fine. It actually looks like a well-lit Trek bridge. It's how shiny and overdone much of the room itself is.
