Meh. It’s true enough, and it still used Tasha’s background well. Blatant? Yeah. At least it was talking about fictional groups rather than tying it to specific real world cultures. I think in a such polarized world, it is almost impossibile to do a good quality-tv show for families. I mean, imagine an episode where they say that trans people have rights. Really, there would be a Capitol-style assault on studios.

I prefer a Trek show for us streaming viewers and not just something that appeals to the lowest common denominator. For that there are the countless L&O shows.

And maybe I'm not a big connoisseur of the American television scene, but what is considered a good quality family TV show broadcast on your national networks?

No clue. My kids and I watch a lot of animated streaming shows, or older shows. Perhaps the closest for us is "The Goldbergs" but even that isn't default family watching.

But, then, I don't watch broadcast TV so perhaps I am not the right person to ask. And, honestly most of the kids I talk with at work are watching things with parents like Walking Dead or The Mandalorian.

I think that the concept of "quality family tv shows" is completely dead. I mean, it could make sense when there were only three TV channels and one TV in the house, so they were all forced to watch the same thing. But now it would be just an act of cruelty to force children to see the same things that parents like: "Son, I know that watching JAG with your father now may seem like a useless cruelty, but one day you will thank me."

Perhaps I should explain my point . With all the alternatives there are today, it's simply harder for kids to find something to watch with their parents. And I can also understand that sometimes it can be difficult for writers to create something of quality that is appealing to every age group on a TV show (obviously for a movie it's easier).

I give up trying to write fiction that is friendly for "all ages" there's no point anymore for somthing that appeals to everyone since "family TV time" is a thing of the past really, I think my family were one of the lasts to do that kind of thing that I knew of at the time

I think what really is apparent now is that tastes will vary. Certainly Walking Dead isn't a "family show" but it still gets parents and kids watching it. I think writing a good story is the best part.

As for family time, that's something that requires effort on the part of the parents.

Like you said, Walking Dead wasn't conceived a "family show" but TNG was.

I think it is impossible nowadays to do an "All-Ages" Star Trek. Obviously, if the whole family decides to see it together, there is no one to stop them, indeed, I would be very happy for them. But it is absolutely improbable that today in the writers' room someone would say: "Ok, how we tell this story in an accessible way for an 7 to 90 year old audience?".

I think how you do that is tell a good story. Look at Gargoyles. It is arguably a child framed show, especially at the time it was released on Disney. But it had different themes, topics of alienation and feeling like an outcast, with fairly long story arcs. It could work well for adults as well as children. And I think that is the art of telling a good story.

Honestly, I think Hollywood simply doesn't trust much of the general audience now so they aim for a sweep of the best demographic to spend money rather than automatically telling a good story.

Kind of hoping the new Prodigy show will fall into that category. My daughter is looking forward to it, but I fear it's going to be like Star Wars Resistance. The puerile writing and childish slapstick in that show really turned me off. I miss Rebels & Clone Wars.

Hopefully Bad Batch will scratch that itch soon.
