The Clone Wars and Rebels - A First Timer's Thread

You can hear the pride and sadness in Ahsoka's voice as she tells Erza about Anakin while watching his training drills on the holocron. Than her moment of clarity. But also her reconciliation with Yoda. Even though it was brief, Ahsoka needed that little smile from Master Yoda. But its also at this point that we kind of start to see what's coming.

Fun fact: The knighting ceremony seen in this episode first show up in the old 'The Clone Wars' micro-series. One of a few things (characters, ships, events and even a few voice actors) that were held over from that show which gives it a sort of half Legends, half-kinda-sort-maybe canon status. As in; some of these events definitely happened (Ventress's recruitments and first confrontation, Anakin's knighting, Anakin & Padme swapping Artoo & Threepio as a mutual gift, etc) and so far this is the only depiction we have of most of them, and most canon sources treat it as pretty much happening as show...more or less.

All three storylines were emotional, but when Ahsoka finds out Anakin is Vader and she screams and you see the tear, man someone give her a hug.

A minor quibble, but that wasn't her finding out (since that already happened at the top of the season) that was her grappling with her denial. She already KNOWS he's Vader, she just doesn't want to BELIVE he's Vader.

Oh and I'm not entirely sure why but this shot of Ahsoka looking back over her shoulder at a vision of Yoda sat on a log, may just be my favourite shot in any Star Wars anything. It just looks like a McQuarrie painting come to life.

Maybe I read the original scene wrong, but I saw it as she had an inkling that Anakin was Vader, but she wasn't entirely sure. What she saw in her vision in the Temple was confirmation, leading to the emotional outburst. I didn't see any kind of denial from her.

I do know a duel between Vader and Ahsoka is coming but yeah this season is building up to that moment, and it's doing it really well. Really looking forward to these final four episodes.

I didn't see any kind of denial from her.

She literally screamed the word "NO!"
Also note the deliberate directorial choices in this episode. You never see Vader/Anakin speak. His dialogue is only heard over shots of Ahsoka; because it's really about her own internal dialogue. She never confronts the vision itself, it's always behind her. It's all about denial and acceptance of a horrific truth.

As for learning the truth in the first place; look at her reactions here. Recognition, confusion, disgust, horror. It's Anakin familiar presence, but distorted, mutilated. A dark and twisted version of him. And if that's not enough, it's clear in this later scene that she's holding something back, and it's pretty obvious what, given the context. It's also later implied that part of the reason she keeps flitting back and forth, going on her secretive Gandalfy errands is that she's investigating Vader and the Inquisitors. Indeed she explicitly says "I have questions that need answers..." when asked why she's not joining them to recruit Rex.

She knows what she felt was Anakin, she's confirmed that feeling by following up and investigating him, and this is her dealing with that truth.

I also just found out Sarah Michelle Geller is the voice of one of the inquisitors.

She's also married to the actor who voiced Kanan.

I think I've said this a few times in this thread, but after I finish Rebels and rewatch the Mandalorian episode with Ahsoka, I am planning to rewatch Rouge One. I think of all the Star Wars movies, that one will give me much more appreciation because I will actually understand what is going on. I've only seen the movie once and it was in the movie theater. At the time I was only knowledgeable about what was happening in the movies. Doing this whole thing with Mandalorian, leading into Clone Wars, leading into Rebels has been quite a rewarding experience.

I think I've said this a few times in this thread, but after I finish Rebels and rewatch the Mandalorian episode with Ahsoka, I am planning to rewatch Rouge One. I think of all the Star Wars movies, that one will give me much more appreciation because I will actually understand what is going on. I've only seen the movie once and it was in the movie theater. At the time I was only knowledgeable about what was happening in the movies. Doing this whole thing with Mandalorian, leading into Clone Wars, leading into Rebels has been quite a rewarding experience.

Aside from Chopper's cameo, The Ghost is seen twice in Rogue One, once parked outside the Yavin base and once during the battle of Scariff. You also hear a page for General Syndulla at the Yavin base, but you might need to have your subtitles on to catch it.

Last time I watched the movie was right after the Rebels finale

I might have to try that. Rogue One stood out more to me with the visuals than any sort of emotional investment. I wonder if rewatching after Rebels would impact that.

The unique thing with Rogue One is that it's approach to character and world building is all but reversed compared to the "Saga" movies. The latter having the characters up-front with the world build just there in the background. With the former, the characters are still certainly upfront, the world building almost has equal billing.

Case in point, just look at the ending; everyone dies but the movie keeps going for a full 4 mins before the credits roll, because the story of "the world" of Star Wars isn't done yet.

Twilight of the Apprentice (Season 2 Finale)

The season was building up to this moment so I might as well talk about the finale. That was insanely good. The first part we met Maul again, seemingly an ally grooming Ezra to do his bidding. How they wrote the Ezra/Mual scenes did seem ambigious, meaning you didn't know if Maul was an Ally or not. I think it is especially telling after watching the final season of The Clone Wars where Maul was kinda right about everything and maybe he was an ally. Anyway, the look of this episode was amazing, especially inside the Sith Temple.

The biggest moment of these episodes though was the thing this season was building to the most, the duel between Ahsoka and Vader. That was amazing, and I know Ahsoka is alive but I'm really looking forward to finding out what her fate was. It looked like it was her who was walking deeper into the cave, but it was from a pretty far distance it was hard to tell. The Morai bird appeared again, which is probably like the 3rd or 4th time I've seen the bird since the Clone Wars finale. I know this finale aired first, but it is kind of interesting watching this series knowing what happened in the Clone Wars final season. It really does add so much to Ahsoka's story and it's probably why I'm so excited about it.

Overall, that was a great season. Looking forward to what is to come, but I kind of feel like I like Rebels more than Clone Wars now. Both series are good, but there is a new found urgency in Rebels that sometimes was lacking in the other series. Also, I love these characters, even though I'm ready for a Sabine Mandalorian story.

Is Ezra starting to turn to the Dark Side. Sure seems that way after this finale.

Season 3 is off to an interesting start. Ezra from the finale to the third episode of the season has been kind of bratty. I guess that's the power of being close to turning to the Dark side. I liked the stuff between Kanan and Bendu (I did recognize Tom Baker's voice instantly, even though I have never seen his Doctor Who) and the episode where Maul and Ezra are looking into the holocrons was excellent. When Maul says "He Lives", was he talking about Obi Wan? Also, the twin suns made me instantly think of Luke Skywalker and Tatooine. They are starting to build towards A New Hope and I did read that Season 4 takes place shortly before the events of Rouge One. That's exciting to get this close to where the Saga all began back in '79.

I choose to treat all of those questions as rhetorical since I don't even want to hint at what the actual answers are at this stage.

A few tid-bits though: timeline wise this is *after* 'Solo', so presumably somebody managed to get Maul away from Crimson Dawn and strand him on Malachor. The running theory is that Qi'ra may have pulled off a coup, but no actual proof one way or the other exists...yet.
For Maul's live action appearance, they actually had Sam Witwer on set with Ray so they could fully cooperate to sell Sam's voice and Ray's physical presence as one coordinated performance. Also, Sam was the one that corrected Ron Howard when they were going to give Maul his old TPM lightsaber, which is how we ended up in his repurposed Inquisitor lightsaber making it into live action...

Overall, that was a great season. Looking forward to what is to come, but I kind of feel like I like Rebels more than Clone Wars now. Both series are good, but there is a new found urgency in Rebels that sometimes was lacking in the other series.

I don't disagree, but I will say that at least part of that is down to the two shows being fundamentally different animals. 'Rebels' has a fairly traditional format, with a core group of characters, telling mostly episodic stories within larger arcs, with consistent season structure; premier > mid-season break > finale.

'Clone Wars' was at it's heart an anthology show, so it had a MUCH broader range of stories that it could tell, ranging from: "hey, let's adapt Kurosawa's 'Seven Samurai' into a 20 minute cartoon" to "how about a two part Godzilla tribute?" to "Artoo and Threepio have a wacky 'Gulliver's Travels' type adventure" and "a highly allegorical avant-garde Shakespearean tragedy about the nature of the force..." While the seasons certainly tended to have flashy action packed premiers (mostly to make CN happy), it was less consistent when it came to finales and season structure overall. It was all just one long stream of episodes that sometimes went off the air for 6-8 months.
While you generally know where you stand with 'Rebels', Clone Wars could just go *anywhere* on a whim.
