News Strange New Worlds casting/new characters

What about Kirk's.. Dad? He was in Starfleet.. Maybe his mom with him? Not like there's kids at home.. Maybe he re uped..
And convinces pike to keep an eye on his son maybe after an accident that forces old Kirk to retire?

Or, he can meet him.

There are several things said in "The Menagerie" that make no sense and have to be ignored, so they may as well ignore another for the sake of convenience.
I'm with you on this. My comment was more for the people wringing their hands over the possibility of it happening. If sticking to an incredibly minor line of dialogue really mattered to TPTB (it doesn't), Kirk can show up without ever meeting Pike. But it's fine if they do meet, and would probably be interesting to see.

The line in question was that Kirk met Pike when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. It doesn't say anything about Kirk maybe sticking around for 3 seasons afterwards. So there's no issue.

Mendez tells Kirk that Pike "is about your age," which he is not. Pike is considerably older than Kirk, one of the things that the Kelvinverse folks got right when they put the two characters together onscreen. Pike was about Kirk's age at the time that Spock served under him, over a decade earlier.

In fact, Jeffrey Hunter was older than Malachi Throne, who played Mendez.

There's a lot that doesn't work and doesn't make sense in the wrapper story for "The Menagerie;" what's good in it is, well, "The Cage."

They could use the speculated upcoming
Guardian of Forever
subplot in Discovery to explain changes. Otherwise Kirk becoming biracial and Boyce becoming Indian would be hard to explain.

That said, I admit I am curious as to one thing: how do Kirk and Spock meet for the first time?

Indeed in WNMHGB, Spock calls him Jim. there could be enough time since Kirk took command for that familiarity to develop, but would make more sense if Spock got used to calling Kirk by his first name before he was Spock's commanding officer.

That WNMHGB takes place soon after Kirk assumed command in a fannish conceit.

Yes, but Spock agreeing to call him by his first name makes more sense if they are merely fellow officers on a mission together. We saw in The Voyage Home how reticent "Default Spock" is to call him Jim, because of their relative positions of authority.

Kirk is not going to be a regular in the series but at some point he will show up. No way they can resist doing this. Same with McCoy and maybe Scotty and the rest of TOS cast. They all will make at least one guest appearance,

Where's it suggested that Boyce is "becoming Indian?"

Not sure what to think about those characters yet. Very human-havy, which is kinda disappointing to me because I like alien characters and I was hoping for an Andorian. Though maybe "La'an" is an alien?Spock as the only alien character would be boring, since we have already learned so much about Vulcans and there's many other species that deserve exploration.
The doctor is hopefully M'Bega, which would pretty much give them a blank canvas. Would have preferred a female CMO and a male nurse tbh, but whatever.
I'm alright with young Uhura being there, the character deserves some attention, I guess.

But none of them really screams super interesting to me. Let's see how this goes?

On second thought...why even have a nurse as a main character? Unless we are talking a Lower Deck's type of deal I don't see that as a vital main character position...
(no offense to real nurses, who are awesome and important, I'm just worried we're gonna have a Nurse Chapel at our hands)

^ Still don't understand how Kirk could possibly turn up, since we know he and Pike don't even meet face to face until Kirk takes over command of the Enterprise, and obviously it's too early for that.
who cares as long as they can make interesting story about kirk in SNW i quite frankly don't give a shit about ''canon'' :rommie:

Chapel was a reoccurring character. The bigger worry would be the character turning out like Rand, a regular reducing to nothing.

The problem I'm having is really with the character description. Like Tendi has a lot of her character that isn't a sterotypical nurse, and Kes had her whole Ocampa deal to create stories.
But this "Miller" character?
heroic, charming, free-thinking, and “the beating heart” of sickbay
She already sounds like she's just a satellite to the doctor. Like she's the sickbay mommy who comes in when daddy doctor is too strict and cheers you up. Plus SNW is not a medical drama, but a SciFi adventure show, which has the potential to reduce her importance and screen-time.

Edit: a more benign interpretation could also be that she is supposed to conflict with the doctor, which...really...again?

Part of me really hopes they're adapting Gabrielle Carlotti from the Early Voyages comics (even though I know that the chances of them taking anything from a 1990s Marvel comic is extremely slim), but I'd love to see her and the Tholians.
