News Strange New Worlds casting/new characters

I doubt the ship's chief engineer is an Ensign fresh out of the Academy. If she's on the show, she'll be one of the engineering staff, but not the chief engineer. Besides, according to Disco season 2, the Enterprise's chief engineer is a male.
I honestly don't remember them mentioning who the engineer was in season 2. I assume it wasn't anyone familiar?

He gets to open hails and high five the equally underdeveloped weapons officer.

The bridge crew of Discovery need their own middle decks type show.

I think they intend to have a mentor-student dynamic with the chief engineer and the cadet.

Nope, a new character named Louvier.
Obviously louvier will be replaced by Scotty sometime between 2257 when an oboe for Charon takes place and 2265 when Kirk takes command as Scotty is chief engineer (unknown when he actually took the post though.)

Whoops. My bad!

Disco’s minor character get very little character development though, current season aside, that’s its hard to remember at all.
I'm wondering how many of these characters will get any development. If they're going for a TOS style, it'll be the Pike, Spock, Number One show and the rest will be scenery.

Except Uhura because, Uhura. And I wonder if they'll give us some pre-TOS Spockhura?

They save that for first officers:p

For the Enterprise computer I assume that Jenette Goldstein will return.

(I know she was in "Ephraim & Dot", can't remember if she did the voice in any other ep)

^ Are you sure? I'm not aware of the Enterprise computer having any lines in that episode. And there's no mention of it on Memory Alpha either (it only credits Julianne Grossman as doing the Discovery computer).

Honestly, a couple of Short Treks just showing some "day in the life" stuff of Owo, Detmer, Bryce, etc would actually be pretty awesome (and it would be CHEAP....are you listening CBS???).
Easiest way to get all of those characters some badly needed screen time without taking anything away from the main show, and without breaking the budget. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened yet.

Yes, I only watched the episode back in September and actually made note of it. Grossman is listed in the credits as "Discovery Computer" for legal reasons only, basically that's what's written on her contract for her to be credited as, so that's what she's credited as despite the fact she does the voice of the computers of the shuttles and other Starfleet ships.

I really hope all the characters will get their share of the spotlight.
And before people now say "butbutbut it's supposed to be like TOS!"
You can make an episodic l show while also giving the secondary characters spotlight episodes.

makes me wonder about Piper, Sulu and Scotty then. Cause Im sure Mitchell came aboard when Kirk came aboard.
Really? From WNMHGBF I'd reckon that that Spock and Mitchell had been on the Enterprise for some time, before Kirk took charge.
