Spoilers New season 3 badges

Just for completeness, and to round out this thread, here's the final version of the new badges (at least as far as I can work out from all the pics I've managed to comb through so far...!)

From The Ready Room:

The new TriCom badges use hand gestures:
Up - Holopadd
Squeeze and pull out - Tricorder
Tap - Transporter controls
Double tap - Transport to home

So the thing monitors your hand movements... guess a lot of single officers get all kinds of holo stuff in their face all the time ;) :guffaw:

And here's the official design:

They also had one that looked like one of the fan designs someone posted here:

Good Lord those things are really hard to figure out the person's rank!

Don't get me wrong, they look like perfect representations of them, but suffer from a serious design flaw. No wonder it's been so hard to get a good idea what they look like from the promo stills.

DAMN! That's probably the best (and biggest) screen-cap I've ever seen!

The focal point is definitely affixed perfectly to the badge eye-line. It's like the producers said, "Here you go, shut up about what the badges look like, already!"

Cool! Thanks for all that!

The fact that it’s SO difficult to work out without getting clear, in focus close-ups or the images of the official designs is hardly a positive comment on the overall design ...!

The official images pretty much show just how indistinguishable the badges really are; glance at that image and they all look pretty much the same!!

Nevertheless, I *do* like the general idea, it just needed better balance between the polished and matt components to improve contrast and make the relevant areas more readily visible.

The other thing that is immediately obvious is that this is the first “official” rank scheme from any era of Trek, that I have seen, which includes not just the rank of Fleet Captain but an actual separate distinctive insignia for that grade as a separate rank.

I have to say that, even with the combination of black and gold pips, the Fleet Captain badge is rather odd — given the use of the gold lower section, it looks like it should be significantly senior to Commodore, the apparent next grade up!

The obvious solutions would have been to use either (a) the same as all the other non-flag officers with the polished silver lower section but then have five pips instead of the four pips for Captain, or (b) use the flag officer version with the gold lower section but use a single black pip to clearly indicate the grade is junior to Commodore. The two gold / two black that they show in the official images makes absolutely NO sense to me.

Oh well...

It also confirms that David Cronenberg’s character in 3x05 is wearing a Commodore’s badge.

I refuse to believe these comm badges are also tricorders, PADDs, and personal transporters. A cool concept, but absolutely ludicrous. The computational power, as well as the energy needed to break a body down and reconstruct it, not just once, but numerous times in succession, housed in that little metal oval, really stretches credulity. Even by Trek standards. Flame me if you must, but also give me some hypnotically convincing technobabble to sell how it works. Please!

That it's tied directly in to the ships computer and can access all systems. It isn't running the processes but acting as a gateway to all the processes, transporters, sensors, force fields.

Also, quantum.

So what is Linus doing wrong?
