What was "The Burn" and what caused it?

So, noone is interested in History with Artificial Singularity's the Romulans used? No M/AM reactors or Dilithium (Unless it DOES Use dilithium for some contrived reason)

Most, but not all of it went boom. Most people, not willing to risk another boom, are not traveling by warp. Only those with limited options, and thus make their living doing something potentially risky (using dilithium), are competing for the small amount that is left.
Suddenly Federation Outpost guy chilling for years likely with a luxurious holodeck on hand doesn't seem so crazy anymore, assuming that being shot at and dealing with criminals is an average day for Book and other people like him out in the real galaxy.

The, uh, Zhat Vash wiped out all data on artificial singularities because they, uh, can.

Romulans still mine dilithium at Remus. So perhaps the AQS drive is little different from conventional drives, except antimatter is replaced by some sort of gravity tomfoolery as the means of storing energy and releasing it rapidly.

I can dig it......Can't believe it's been a week already. Looking forward to midnight PST!

Like some others have speculated. The power in a federation warp core is generated by a matter antimatter reaction; and the dilithium crystals regulate that reaction to make use of the power generated.

It could be the same for the Romulans in that the artificial singularity generates the power, but they too may need dilithium crystals to regulate the reaction and make use of the power generated.

has an interview that reveals:
The Burn has greatly impacted and affected many galaxies

So it's not just our galaxy!
Starting to feel like the Q again, or one of many assorted god-like ascended beings.

Or... the Iconians are returning, killing interstellar warp travel as a prelude to invasion? Hmm... This multiple galaxy thing definitely adds a new dimension to the mystery.

Nope. Burnham is the cause of the Burn. I guaran-freaking-tee it.

God I hope not. One person cannot be at the center of all things in the universe all the freakin' time! At best, it stretches credulity of the show and does nothing to help the audience maintain suspension of disbelief. At worst, it will give the insipid "Mary Sue" crowd fresh new red meat upon which to gorge themselves. It's just simply too implausible. I really hope they don't go there. I much prefer a "Q Magic" solution to that.
I wonder if the extra-galactic AI, evidenced in Picard, might be the cause of The Burn?
This would be better. Marginally so, but still better. I suspect the show runners have been looking for a way to fully integrate DISCO into Prime Universe canon to discredit the haterz, and that may be what they can use.

No, but this does.

The "wormhole research" is a reference to the 2013 videogame, where the Gorn arrive from an extragalactic wormhole.

The "transwarp network" is likely in reference to transwarp radio, from Lora Johnson's Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise where Star Trek Into Darkness gets much of it's on-screen technobabble (most notably the shield tech). The map of the transwarp network is in the same style as the "subspace comms network" graphics from that book.

Episode 3 will reveal that in the 30th century, all dilithium went inert, and all ships with active warp cores detonated.

Cool. Although there's plenty of wormhole lore to associate with this in the Prime 2260s if we want to. Perhaps somebody read the pertinent novels?

Curious how the network is exclusively in Klingon space...

The Narada never appeared to be particularly fast. Spock's little scooter ran rings around her - but Kirk's severely damaged ride also warped to Earth much, much faster than the mining rig, which had had a head start and wasn't heading away from Earth for the first couple of hours of relevant action.

Nor did she appear particularly advanced in other respects, and never demonstrated, say, self-repair abilities or remarkable shielding or firepower. But being big is useful in itself...

If dilithium is out of the picture, does that bring to prominence the little players who always made do with paralithium or fusion or whatnot? Or the big but reclusive players, the demigods who usually wouldn't be bothered by the pleas of the mortals?
