if the episode turnabout intruder had never been made, but all other aspects of the shop remained the same, you don't think we'd still be having discussions about the blindingly obvious sexism in the 23rd century, and the fact that women rarely advance to lt. commanders and are never seen above that rank?

OK but taking over as officer in command of a vessel is not really related to being officer of the deck/watch.

When you were "given" command of the ship, it couldn't be taken, you had to actively give it back, or I suppose, die.
The problem is the Computer.
If the computer is smart enough to keep track of who has been given command, then the Computer could be really obtuse about ##ckers, saying that they are in charge when they are not.
TOS computers are not that smart.
Remember when the Niners didn't know which Vulcan hadn't touched homeplate, and he hid in the dugout?
