The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

Company of Thieves (SG-1)

I'm not entirely sure why the Lucian Alliance is this thing this late in the series with the Ori destroying everything in it's path

Are you saying you think the writers are phoning it in? Just wait, you ain't seen nothing yet when it comes to the stupidity of that storyline.

To put it in non spoilery way you will be doing this :brickwall::brickwall::brickwall: soon enough.

Oh yes The Quest is what half my spoilers have been about. I can't wait to scream them without spoilers.

I agree that the fall of the Goa'uld created some interesting questions in terms of a power vacuum; I just didn't find the Lucian Alliance very interesting as successors. :p

they are not. Now if they were the focus of a movie coming up, like Stargate Continnum (I have a sneaking suspicion they aren’t) than ok. It’s just I wonder at the time how long did the writers think this series was going to go? I guess they got word of cancellation while shooting episode 200 but it’s season 10. The Lucian Alliance storyline, while fun, is just sidetracking at this point. Also they are not “gods” so if they were supposed to be the successors to the System Lords, it was a downgrade.

You are really close now to the big SGA mid season two parter, "The Return Part 1 & 2" as well as the big SG1 two parter "The Quest Part 1 & 2".

I was hoping to see The Quest yesterday and then for some reason I lost motivation yesterday to do a whole marathon worth of episodes. It might have worked out because maybe today I will see both Quest and Return.

Well they were planning a season 11, several movies, a few more Atlantis seasons and three seasons of Universe.

that seems like overkill to me. Depending on how the Atlantis finale is, I think they could have gone maybe one more season. SG-1 looks ready to end though.

A few more seasons after where you are right now, aka Season 3, plus 3 more. They were planning 6 seasons which would have been fine and I say this as someone who hates later Atlantis / Stargate.

Universe was always overkill. At this point of development they were thinking Universe to be a movie or miniseries. it would have made a great miniseries.

There was going to be at least two more movies. One with Jack being the main person, and then one where characters from all the franchise would come together. But they all got canceled after the DVD movie market failed (also MGM failed too).

MGM now is just being stupid by not bringing the franchise back.

... was that FARSCAPE got the green light guarantee of a season 4 AND 5 at the same time. So when Bonnie Hammer gave the news about the cancellation in the middle of season 4, it felt like a MASSIVE betrayal.
Oh boy, that's really bad. I would have been pissed too about having the rug pulled from under my feet.

Is that the one with the... ? ;)

Aww, don't remind me :( I really was looking forward to that one.
As a Jack fan, I didn't like what his character had become in those later seasons. In his rare appearances he was only there to make stupid jokes, and then everyone looked at him, but nobody laughed and they were not funny anyway. If the new fans only knew this Jack, they probably wondered why we all were so gushing about him.

Also, another disappointment, we never got the already announced fifth wave of Stargate action figures which had Hammond, Jack in USAF dress uniform, Ba'al and a Horus guard. I had looked forward to that one as well as they looked incredible. But with the series ending or being over, retailers did not put in enough pre-orders so it never got made.

MGM now is just being stupid by not bringing the franchise back.

It's amazing how a glorified 24-hour-film-fest entry didn't set the nerdosphere on fire with our latent desire for more Stargate. Bet the MGM executives were really confused by how that didn't work.

Plus, it was an opportunity to reuse the Goauld ships. It just doesn't really feel like Stargate without a Goauld pyramid mothership.
Eh, they already had a built-in excuse to use Goa'uld ships what with the Jaffa still using them. And by keeping Ba'al active as a threat, they had a ready go-to for getting into fights with Goa'uld ships. The Lucian Alliance really were extraneous.
I guess they got word of cancellation while shooting episode 200 but it’s season 10.
The cancellation announcement came just after 200 aired. At the time they were actually filming an episode from later in the season titled Bad Guys.

I actually didn't mind the Lucian Alliance too much. I kind of wonder if they actually might have been better off with them as the new Big Bads rather than the Ori. If nothing else it at least would have gotten them away from another set of false god villains.

But they aren't threatening enough. It's a steep downgrade from Goa'uld to Lucian Alliance. Besides, they needed something to threaten the galaxy, because apparently you have to keep making the threats bigger and bolder and there is nothing bigger than threatening the Galaxy

Phantoms (SG: A)

This was a decent episode. Not as good as the few episodes that came before but we got some nice backstory on Sheppard for his time in Afghanistan and the highlight of the episode was the very ending where Rodney was saying to Shep, "You Shot Me". :D

Looking forward to both midseason 2 part episodes tonight.

The Return I (SG: A)

Decided to go with the season I've been enjoying more first and that is Atlantis. This was a hell of a start to this two parter. An Ancient ship has returned and decided to take back Atlantis, forcing the crew to evacuate on the others of Jack O'Neill and Woolsy. Time passes, Weir looks miserable, McKay hates his job, and Sheppard can't stand his team. We find out the Ancient replicators have come back and their base code has been rewritten so they can attack their creators and Atlantis falls, leaving O'Neill and Woolsey trapped behind enemy lines. Weir, McKay, Beckett, and Sheppard hitch a plan to get out of the SGC and take back the city, before the SGC can nuke it.

This was very good set up. I got a little emotional over the goodbyes, especially with John and Teyla, and I loved how all the storylines from this season have been coming together. You have the team bonding that has really elevated this season above season 2 (Sateda), you have Ladum back asking Teyla and Ronon for help, you have the Replicator storyline, and the Ancients have returned. Really excited to see where this goes and the battle to take back the city. Also, I love how much I'm seeing RDA in Atlantis (And SG-1) in both these seasons. It just feels better knowing that he's around.

I think the Lucian Alliance had the potential to be much more interesting if they made them a bigger threat in terms of tech. As it stood, they didn't always seem to take advantage of the weapons left behind by the Goa'uld.

But, still fun villains.

Sure, but it wouldn't have been that hard to make them a bigger threat, especially if they were the focus of the series after the Goa'uld's defeat.
I did enjoy the last couple seasons just as much as the ones before, but I still wish they had gone for a totally different type of bad guys than more false gods. They did do a lot of different stuff from what they did with the Goa'uld, but it was still the same basic concept.

The Return II (SG: A)

That was a lot of fun. I loved the Banter between Jack and Woolsey, and I was really surprised on how Jack Heavy this episode was. It really did feel like old times, him making fun of Beckett, getting annoyed by Woolsey, and then snarkily complimenting him at the end. So does this mean all the ancients are now dead, now that the Replicators killed this batch. I was honestly hoping they would have a bigger part of the story but they were really a plot device to get the Atlantis crew out of the city. That was awesome that they blew up the control room in the first 5 minutes of the episode. I loved the scene of just flying through the city as well. It still looks gorgeous in Season 3.

I think the overall thing I can say about this two parter was it really does feel like that team working together vibe from earlier in the season is alive and well and it's really helping the series out big time. Everyone got something to do, and everyone got a chance to shine. I still would like Teyla to get more to do though but reading the synopsis of the next episode looks like the Teyla episode I've been wanting. This one was a ton of fun, and it keeps the good times rolling for this season.
