Why hunt AI? Why kill Maddox if it's not to prevent something that hasn't happened yet?

Two responses come to mind:

1. Because all this has happened before, and all this will happen again.

2.

Actually, although I was just trying to be funny with the Nero scene, it does beg the question: perhaps Commodore Oh is from the future?

It goes back to an old STAR WARS observation:

"Hey - Why DIDN'T the Imperials just shoot the Lifepod with C-3P0 and R2D2 regardless of the no lifeforms' reading?"

"Because then - STAR WARS would have been a VERY SHORT film; and not have made all that money..." ;)

Same for Star Trek II:TWoK :

"Hey, how is it a Federation Starships sensors can't tell Ceti Alpha VI blew up (probably leaving a new ring of asteroids); or that Ceti Alpha V shifted orbit?"

"Because then, Chekov and Captain Terell would never have beamed down to get the mind slugs implanted and STII would have again been very short and boring..."

Also...why didn’t the Zhat Vash ever try to kill Data? Or Lore? Or B-4? Or Juliana Tainer? Or Noonien Soong, for that matter?

Laughed at "House! Shields up!"

A great, classic Riker line; it was awesome to hear him shout it again.

I actually tried it with Alexa -- said "Alexa: shields up!". She responded with something about setting her up to protect the house (an actual function). I was amused.

No one knew Juliana Tainer was an android except for her husband and a handful of the Enterprise crew. The Tal-Shiar had B-4 in their possession. Lore was in pieces hidden away, and later in bits in some Starfleet vault. Soong was in hiding, presumed dead. And Data was pretty well protected on the Federation flagship.

Seems like none of that should be a problem for a spy organization with unlimited resources whole sole purpose is to eliminate synthetic life.

And nobody knew Dahj and Soji were synthetic, but someone found out.

The Tal-Shiar had B-4 in their possession.

The Tal Shiar never had B-4. Shinzon did. And he hid B-4 on a planet right near the Neutral Zone which emitted positronic signatures. So the Zhat Vash could have found him as easily as the Enterprise did.

Lore was in pieces hidden away, and later in bits in some Starfleet vault.

But between those times, he was active. And we don’t actually know what became of Lore.

Soong was in hiding, presumed dead.

Not when he was actively building his androids.

And Data was pretty well protected on the Federation flagship.

The Romulans successfully had a spy aboard the Enterprise in the guise of a Vulcan ambassador. Surely the Zhat Vash could have just as easily infiltrated it.

Something this episode does remarkably well is be sensitive to Soji's situation. This is, perhaps, the most interesting the character has been during the series. I don't think it coincidental that there has not been a flurry of posts calling out her behavior toward Picard or describing her as impetuous.

Anyone got a link to that?

Even if religion just goes away, I'd figure that Jews would still exist as a sort of ethnicity. I know plenty of non-religious Jews.
Couldn't help but think of this

Maybe that was the POINT of the Zaht Vash orchestrating the Mars attack. They weren't concerned about the situation with Romulus (it wasn't even a consideration one way or the other). They saw it as a way to make the Federation abandon synthetic life research, shut down or destroy any existing Androids, and make it easier for them to go after any rogue researchers in Federation space.

In TNG, Riker pontificated about how superior 24th century humans are because they no longer enslave and kill animals for food. I guess free-range venomous rabbits are okay.

Kor
Well he did not say they did not eat free range, roaming road kill

Well, I guess Starfleet would like you as long as you're a well-behaved yes man who will obey all orders even if it costs you the life of your son. Honestly Riker should be giving an FNN interview and he'd get far more sympathy than Picard did (since I think the Fed citizens can relate to Thad more than to Romulan refugees).

Unless the UFP is a military dictatorship , Starfleet should not have the power to ban any medical procedure. It should be a decision of the Federation government, or the holy UFP is a military police state....(Twilight zone music plays)

In a world where people can get meat that is essentially indistinguishable from the real thing - guilt and cruelty free - you don't think that a lot more people would become squeamish about killing animals for food? It seems to me the social norm would flip, where "vegetarianism" would be the default for humans, and eating meat would seem to be the weird thing.

Not if one lives on a colony. Not everyone lives on an Earthly paradise planet

'Because Gene decided it is like that' is a reason for most things in Star Trek. Most 24th century people being atheists is part of the setting, like it or not, and I really don't want it to be changed.
Still waiting for the love instructors....

And religion is already said to persist in both ENT and TOS so it's ludicrous to believe that spirituality or even organized religion will be all but extinct on both Earth and in the wider Federation just 100 years after Kirk. Religion - whether or not somebody likes or agrees with it - has been ingrained into human genetic makeup for millennia if not longer and just a couple of hundred years of warp drive and cures for most diseases isn't going to change that.
I find the idea that organisesd religion on Star Trek Earth loses its political power and theocracies are a thing of the past a good thing, but I would hope humans are diverse enough to accept other humans having religious or non religious beliefs as long as said beliefs are not harmful to others. I expect Vatican city still exists, the Dala Lama is still around and Islamic pilgrims still travel to Mecca even if its just to maintain ancient traditions. Today some card carrying atheists enjoy the Christmas season, they even buy presents and listen to carols! Gasp!
The idea that Star Trek Earth humans are a carbon copy of the fantasy image of modern day USA without religion, deserves to assimilated by the Borg.
I bet there are still humans in the 24th century who hope the writings of the Communist Manifesto will be available on Ferenghinar lol
However its a bit difficult to claim gendar, racial, and religious superiority after April 5th 2063, although Terra Prime did try.

I love how two incidents indicate that the Federation is dead...?:shrug::shrug::sigh:

I am baffled that some fans think the TNG federation was this perfect place of peace and love that did everything right..
