Just to be puckish, isn't "Because Roddenberry said so" kinda a religious attitude, and a fundamentalist one at that?

Star Trek is not a religion and Roddenberry is not the Pope or a prophet, let alone infallible.

And even Berman said he didn't agree with it, he just enforced Gene's ideas because it was good business to do so. What does that say when your #2 thinks your worldview is full of it?

Well the difference is that I understand that Star Trek is fiction...

IIRC Chabon was asked awhile back if he would have Jews in Star Trek, and his response was basically "Human religion is gone among in Roddenberry's world. There are no Jews, Muslims, or Christians. That's just the way the setting works."
That must be why Sisko never came back. You wouldn't believe the hordes of Federationers waiting to worship him upon return. Even Kirk and Picard never got such adulation.

Also, it does make you wonder if there are groups devoted to worshipping Q, or any of the other Trek god like aliens. Especially as in theory these aliens can answer the wishes/prayers of followers.

Anyone got a link to that?

Even if religion just goes away, I'd figure that Jews would still exist as a sort of ethnicity. I know plenty of non-religious Jews.

Well, at least Chabon agrees with me!

Yeah that Sky net vision makes no sense, unless Commodore Oh (An Admiral should be Head of Starfleet intelligence not a Commodore) transplanted her paranoi into Dr.Jurati I see no reason for anyone to experience someone else vision and then say 'oh yes I am a believer and I will kill for you'!! Unless she digested Vulcan kool aid in that tablet or Oh is the daughter of 'share your pain' Sybok.

He does not want to sleep with Raffi, and fancies Agnes, he is thinking with the wrong head.
I thought the term Commodore was more a fixed position (so the Chief of Starfleet Security is always a Commodore) than a Rank so that the smart operators could differentiate themselves from all the suicidal Admirals Starfleet tends to generate.

If not it would sit between Captain and Rear Admiral and is roughly equivalent to the Fleet Captain rank, not that it matters of course as Starfleet is not a military.

As I said in previous chapter threads it is highly likely that more than just the imagery was shared by the Commodore, in this instance it may be that fear can be passed on like a virus, perhaps even the belief that the imagery is absolute truth as well, its not brainwashing but it certainly isn't what I would call a neutral transfer of information, it makes sense that there would be a lot of excess emotional baggage along with it, Jurati may not have received the full hit as I would expect there to be some aspects that the Commodore would not be stupid enough to share.

Rios is going to be gutted when he realises he was used by Jurati, she just killed her ex and then jumped into bed with him, what makes it worse is that he then thought it was Raffi who was being tracked.

He is not going to be happy at all. :censored:

Once he realises it was her he will also realise what happened to Maddox.

This was a great episode, with a lot of cool character stuff and just an overall enjoyable experience. Also, it had the very first good child actor in the franchise (I don't count Nog and Jake, because their characters aged up into being good characters, they were bad as kids/teens but decent to good when they were played as late teens/adults).

Troi and Riker were amazing, I hope we see more of them. I'd even be up with seeing more of their daughter. Overall, this was maybe the strongest episode of a fairly strong series so far.

10/10

Here we go: From 2018:

Let’s talk about the Jews. When Gene Roddenberry created “Star Trek,” he laid out a future in which humanity would move beyond religion. Spock is Jew-ish, many would say. And we’ve got Theodore Bikel doing Worf’s adopted father in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” coded as a Jew, but not explicitly. But where are the full-on Jews in “Star Trek”? Is there room for a character that explicitly identifies with a religious-ethnic group?

It’s not just Jews who are absent; it’s any kind of explicitly religious characters. I can’t think of any explicitly Christian or Hindu or Muslim characters in “Star Trek.” We get Vulcan religion, Klingon religion and other [alien] religions, especially the Bajorans [on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”], sometimes discussions of godlike beings, but I don’t think the absence of Jews is significant in itself.

There's a follow-up question where they ask about "bending the roles" to allow for the exploration of human spirituality. Chabon's response is "I don't know."

Is he going to be devastated? I wasn't getting the vibe there was anything really emotional on his side towards her other than raw hormones.

know plenty of non-religious Jews.

How many of these non-religious Jews have married other Jews? The general trend is that secular Jews outmarry at a very high rate. Like - the UK used to have lots of prominent secular Sephardic families in the 19th century, but they've completely intermarried within the British population now, to the point that most British Jews only had their ancestors migrate to the UK in the 20th century.

By the 24th, unless there is an ethnic Jewish colony somewhere, there should be no one who is Jewish - just people like 1/128th and the like.

And you could stop putting religious people down like that.
I don't believe that there should be a category of ideas that could not be critiqued based on its logical merits. People are free to believe nonsense, and I'm free to call it nonsense. This is one thing I really dislike about religion, the idea that some ideas are 'holy' or 'sacrosanct.' I am super fine with speculating and imaging really wild things, I myself entertain certain metaphysical hypotheses that some might find rather bizarre. But those things can be discussed and critiqued based on empiricism and logic.

I think there was, especially the way he went down those stairs after being told she was in a coma by the EMH.

Funny that the EHM would tell him that but fail to mention that he saw her killing Maddox. :wtf:

He is going to feel like a proper dipstick.
