Kurtzman: 2 more live-action shows in the works

That plan would be bad for the franchise. You have to give your audience time to catch its collective breath. Oversaturation can kill the golden goose.

Oversaturation is not an issue with these series.

Picture taking them out of the Star Trek universe, and set them in none Sci Fi 2020 like regular TV shows. You have spy show, you an experimental show, you have a show that is a series of short films, a show about students going to a military academy, a comedy cartoon from the Rick and Morty guy, a TV cartoon show for kids, a show about a retiree investigating a murder, and a show about a group of explorers. Would anyone ever call that oversaturation of 2020 content? No, they'd look at you funny if you did.

See all of them are so radically different from each other, all they really have in common is they occur in the same universe, but other then the Star Trek/Sci Fi connection, they aren't really in the same genre even.

They could double the amount of shows and as long as there is no thematic overlap but they are in the same universe (or multiverse), then there will be no oversaturation any more then their is an oversaturation of shows set in the 2020's.

And the media has changed, how people consume media has changed thanks to streaming and more.

Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, with Stargirl and Superman and Lois on the way along with possibly Green Arrow and the Canaries. That's just the CW, and they're still doing just fine. I don't think we have to worry about oversaturation with ST.

I think it's best to just enjoy this while we have it. My guess is that in 7 years Trek will have drowned in itself. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

Actually I just found out that even though it's a Netflix show, Lucifer is part of the Arrowverse too.

Only technically, in terms of its involvement in Crisis on Infinite Earths. It's not connected in terms of production like the other ones.

I am a bit concerned that all of these series going into production so quickly could lead to some oversaturation problems again. I felt that DSC's second season was much stronger than its first, so the new creative team is learning, but maybe they should focus a little more on making DSC and now PIC as strong as possible without having to also develop 2 animated series, a Section 31 series and now 2 unannounced series.

But since they're gonna do it anyway, I think the first could be a Pike miniseries or series. The overwhelmingly positive response to Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romjin's performances really says something about how recasting and revisiting a part of Trek's past can be done well, and there are certainly story opportunities since we know so little about the pre-Kirk Enterprise crew. Also, that Enterprise bridge set looks expensive - I'm sure they'd want to get as much mileage out of it as they can. Perhaps it wouldn't be a full-fledged series, but a smaller 6 or 8-episode miniseries. And assuming Section 31 gets off the ground and is in the same time period, there would be the potential to see Pike and the Enterprise make guest appearances, too.

As for a second series, I wonder if they're already planning a spin-off or sequel to PIC, to move Trek firmly into the 25th century, or a prequel to fill in gaps between NEM and PIC.

I don't think it's a huge issue. Discovery will most likely be done after season 3. Picard might end after season 2 and even if they did do a season 3 it would be ending when one of these new shows are starting. The Section 31 show and maybe the cartoons would be only Trek shows around.

Allegedly (not confirmed), DSC's 4th season is already a done deal with production scheduled to begin later this year. And now that they've broken free from the chains of Trek canon and have much more creative freedom than before, I cannot imagine why they would choose to end DSC after season 3. I think they could easily spend the next 3 seasons or so establishing the new state of the galaxy, setting up potential spin-offs, prequels and sequels in the far future.

If you look at the current timeline of the various Trek series, there are still some considerable gaps in the timeline - makes me wonder if they will go back and sprinkle in new series, limited series, TV movies or feature films to flesh out those areas.

There are still huge gaps about what happened to the Federation between:
2161 (ENT "These are the Voyages") to 2255 (DSC "The Vulcan Hello")
2293 (GEN Enterprise-B scenes) to 2363 (TNG "Encounter at Farpoint")
2379 (NEM) to 2399 (PIC "Remembrance")
24?? (PIC, whenever the series ends) to 3205? (DSC season 3)

Next Series: Gul Dukat Takes Miami?

That's basically what happened in the 90s. I'm a huge Trekkie, but by the end of TNG, I had no interest in continuing with DS9 and VOY. Franchise fatigue.

I'm not trying to gatekeep , but come on !
Come one...What? That people can't feel like 7 years of going through TNG (and its unclear if that includes TOS and the TOS films, one which tied directly to TNG) was a lot of Star Trek?

There is no standard for "major Trekkie." It's not a competition.

I didn't say it was a competition. I just don't understand how someone burns out that easily. I'm not judging, just baffled

Then, perhaps, a question of what other activities they engaged in would be appropriate? I certainly didn't go through all of TNG or DS9, but was active in local fan clubs, conventions, costuming, writing and the like.
