We already got some of that in the games, comics, and books so, if were to get a series focused on the OT heroes after Return of the Jedi, it would probably jump ahead a little ways.
This just feels like wishful thinking right now. The fact that we've gotten 3 animated series, and none of them have been direct sequels makes me think it's unlikely. I could see the Rebels characters popping up in a series set after Rebels as supporting characters, but I doubt they'd be the main focus.
Not necessarily. They wanted a story that tied in with the new movies. They can still do a Post-ROTJ story.
Yeah, I mean ideally that'd be nice be so far all the animated shows have been directly tied into the movies one way or the other. The only periods they haven't really explored is the ancient past, the distant future, the decade between TPM & AotC and anything post-Bane/pre-TPM. I'm happy to be wrong about this but I have a hard time seeing them forging totally new material with an Old Republic show or something (though a Clone Wars style anthology show in a similar mould as 'Tales of the Jedi' would be a lot of fun!)
To me, post RotJ feels more like comic book or novel territory if it's going to focus on the Skywalker clan. The major conflict is done and they're mostly off rebuilding the Republic, the Jedi, and apparently starting a racing career. Good for the kind of character focused storytelling they've been doing in those mediums to date, not so much for episodic television. Plus the Mandalorian has the "what's going on in the underworld" angle covered.
If it is a sequel to rebels, then it would probably be set out in the unknown regions, following Sabine and Ahsoka. That would be new territory.
Not impossible, but that's really not ideal for a weekly animated show as it'd require a lot of new assets to not only be built, but also probably designed from scratch. Whereas a show set in the settled galaxy has the benefit of a vast library of existing designs to draw on, most of them instantly recognisable as "Star Wars". The latter is more important than you might think since in leans into branding and merch, which is typically how the show makes it's money back.
Yeah, that's just way too Star Trek. Giving them a Star Destroyer or that old Jedi shuttle makes no difference, since it'll amount to roughly the same in terms of asset creation.
Yeah, I agree that they probably aren't going to go to a totally new era, since they're probably going let the movies establish the totally new stuff. I was thinking more along the lines of the eras you mentioned, with my top choice being the years leading up to Phantom Menace, maybe something about Qui-Gon and a younger Obi-Wan. That way we could still see plenty of familiar faces, and they could do some foreshadowing of the events of the prequels.
