We already got some of that in the games, comics, and books so, if were to get a series focused on the OT heroes after Return of the Jedi, it would probably jump ahead a little ways. This just feels like wishful thinking right now. The fact that we've gotten 3 animated series, and none of them have been direct sequels makes me think it's unlikely. I could see the Rebels characters popping up in a series set after Rebels as supporting characters, but I doubt they'd be the main focus.
I think if they wanted to tell a post-RotJ story, they'd have done that instead of 'Resistance'. A direct 'Rebels' sequel makes about as much sense as a direct 'Clone Wars' sequel. The stories are inexorably tied into the period in which they're set. As much as I might want to see "The Adventures of Ahsoka and Sabine Beyond Wild Space" or "The Ronin and The Gunslinger's Quest for The Sorcerer", my money is on something pre-prequel. Maybe Old Republic, maybe Young Obi Wan, preferably something entirely new. P.S. It's not really suitable for animation but still; ever since 'Queen's Shadow' came out I've kinda wanted to see if they could do a espionage/political intrigue show in a Star Wars setting with Keira Knightley back as Sabé and maybe with Young Leia in tow if they really need an OT character in the mix? The "early post-Clone Wars" years has been touched on more than once, but usually only in the context of "surviving Jedi on the run". The idea of secretly building an insurgency withing a totalitarian dictatorship has a lot of dramatic potential and it's territory Star Wars has never really gotten into. That said, the Cassian & K2 show may end up making that idea redundant.
At this point we've gotten plenty of early Rebellion stories, so I'd prefer our next series go to an era we haven't seen in as much detail.
Not necessarily. They wanted a story that tied in with the new movies. They can still do a Post-ROTJ story.
Yeah, I mean ideally that'd be nice be so far all the animated shows have been directly tied into the movies one way or the other. The only periods they haven't really explored is the ancient past, the distant future, the decade between TPM & AotC and anything post-Bane/pre-TPM. I'm happy to be wrong about this but I have a hard time seeing them forging totally new material with an Old Republic show or something (though a Clone Wars style anthology show in a similar mould as 'Tales of the Jedi' would be a lot of fun!) To me, post RotJ feels more like comic book or novel territory if it's going to focus on the Skywalker clan. The major conflict is done and they're mostly off rebuilding the Republic, the Jedi, and apparently starting a racing career. Good for the kind of character focused storytelling they've been doing in those mediums to date, not so much for episodic television. Plus the Mandalorian has the "what's going on in the underworld" angle covered.
If it is a sequel to rebels, then it would probably be set out in the unknown regions, following Sabine and Ahsoka. That would be new territory.
Not impossible, but that's really not ideal for a weekly animated show as it'd require a lot of new assets to not only be built, but also probably designed from scratch. Whereas a show set in the settled galaxy has the benefit of a vast library of existing designs to draw on, most of them instantly recognisable as "Star Wars". The latter is more important than you might think since in leans into branding and merch, which is typically how the show makes it's money back.
There’s no reason the show couldn’t be set on an old captured Star Destroyer to do just that. You have either Imperial or Rebel fighters or a mix. If you need an explanation, one could be that while the New Republic supported Sabine and Ahsoka’s initiative, this was the only resource they could offer. You have a minimal crew out in the unknown regions looking for Ezra but also mapping it. Yes, this ultimately sounds a little like Star Trek but there are certainly was to Star Wars it up.
Should do one after "Solo" and sort of let that cartoon maybe fix the movie for people who don't like it, much in the way "Clone Wars" helped make the prequels feel a little worst. Jason
Yeah, that's just way too Star Trek. Giving them a Star Destroyer or that old Jedi shuttle makes no difference, since it'll amount to roughly the same in terms of asset creation. Besides, how long can you sustain a show on a "hunt for Ezra" premise? Maybe a full season; after that you need give them show more substance. A direction. Which means consistent adversaries, an over-arching plot and a fundamental set of themes and tone for the show to adhere to. It's just not a good fit and I don't think it was Dave's intent when he ended Rebels. To me, that was him just having most of his characters all ride off into the sunset so they neither get in the way, nor are subject to anyone else's future stories.
This could be why there isn't another Thrawn novel set after "Thrawn: Treason", if they have other plans for what happens to Thrawn after Rebels.
According to Zahn, it's because Filloni has first shout on that story. Doesn't mean he's ready or inclined to tell it, much less have a show already in production.
Yeah, I agree that they probably aren't going to go to a totally new era, since they're probably going let the movies establish the totally new stuff. I was thinking more along the lines of the eras you mentioned, with my top choice being the years leading up to Phantom Menace, maybe something about Qui-Gon and a younger Obi-Wan. That way we could still see plenty of familiar faces, and they could do some foreshadowing of the events of the prequels.
I'm half inclined to think the next animated series could involve Luke, Han, Leia, etc., in the days immediately following Episode VI and before the birth of Ben Solo. We could see the seeds being planted of what would ultimately become the First Order as well as how a certain someone was able to cheat death.
A lot of that has already been covered in other places, so I don't really see them going there again. I don't know if they would go there or not, but I would love to see a young Yoda series, maybe set at the beginning of his time as a Jedi Knight.
With the Clone Wars, the original Clone Wars and 3 films, the PT is the most heavily explored era in SW history. Time to move on.
While I never played the games and don't know anything much about them or the era, a Knights of the Old Republic would seem like an obvious choice - a fresh era that has been largely unexplored in narrative storytelling. That said, I'm sure they would wait to see what the next film or trilogy will be first for two reasons: 1) As an obvious tie-in to what the films are 2) to make sure the canon lines up. They don't want to do a KOTOR series and then films set in that era unless they match. And the films obviously have to take the lead.
Well.. We've never been to uncharted, wild space, unknown regions. Etc, if only briefly at times.. Could show a thrawn rise, leading a imperial remenat out there.. With Ezra sealed away, or as a leader of the resistance out there in chiss space . .. Plenty of story!
