Is it though? I thought megalomania and murderous insanity was practically the only job requirement for Starfleet Admirals...

He's a main cast member, and she's just some measly co-star. Main cast generally get the best quality tailored uniforms.

Not a bad thought, there, but it looks to me like the badges are different. Culber’s looks perfectly oval (like the old logo), while Pollard’s looks like it has a straight edge to it with a couple of hard angles at the top and bottom. It might simply be a bad angle (which it really is), but they definitely don’t seem the same to me.

I doubt there's an arrowhead in the oval. In the trailer, when Cleveland Book sees the arrowhead on Michael's uniform he says "I see you believe in ghosts" implying that symbol is no longer active in 32nd century civilization.

But if they meet someone who wants to restore the Federation, it would probably be a symbol he (and they) adopt in some form to signify: "Hey we're BACK!" :)

I like this theory! I wish I had mentioned it in my video! I was thinking more Bajoran but this connection is better, great catch!

This is my extrapolation of the season 3 Discovery badge:

I think it's the rank on the right-hand side, with 4 segments/pips for captain, 3 for commander etc.

I dig it. The tiny, tiny pips on the previous badges were unworkably tiny. You shouldn't have to squint at someone's chest to determine their rank.

Maybe THAT's why everyone just addresses each other as "commander", no one bothers to literally look any closer.

Quite right. Science fiction shows have had problems with that for years. Rank devices should be distinctive and large enough to be clearly seen from a distance so that soldiers know who should salute first. Trek sometimes fails as that. So did both BSG’s.

So the one in that pic would be... a Lieutenant JG, then?

Either an ensign or a lieutenant if you count the large part as a second pip... or maybe the horizontal lines are the rank indicators not the gold parts...

    Here's a better view:

I'd have preferred the TNG-style 30th anniversary logo, personally.

    It really isn't.

You keep using that word, but it's clear you don't know what it means.

It does remind me of the Bajoran badges from DS9

I know exactly what it means.

The combadge is an oval. It has no style of its own.

You would hate this combadge no matter what it looked it. It's petty.

It's sadly not much of a better view, maybe marginally so. The person wearing it is still way too off-angle to get a good head-on look at it, but yeah, it definitely looks like the rank indicator is the set of lines on the right side of it. This is TOS-era, not TNG (currently set in the far future notwithstanding) - I really miss the cuff braid.
