Marvel films, it's time for a Black female lead

Yeah, it's well past time for such a movie. And we're bogged down in the minutiae of which character's going to get the nod first, aren't we?

White female leads in media are getting as common as white male leads. The push for diversity is nice in theory but I feel that getting happy over attractive white women being the leads in all of these properties is getting tiresome.

Star Wars is supposedly diverse now and it does always have attractive white women being the best characters and it does do a good job of that but the minority races in those movies are comic relief, nobody noticed this and it's actually really racist and dissapointing.

In MCU it's a similar situation with Captain marvel being praised for having attractive white woman Bree Larsen be the main character although a black lady does get to be her sidekick and a black man her comedy sidekick

The new Thor movie is again going to be starring an attractive white woman front and center, although Valkyrie is going to be in it but we don't know to what extent, and will anyone really be surprised if she's mostly used as a figure of fun, and Pormans sidekick? I won't.

Black widow is coming soon featuring an attractive white woman as the star, as is Wanda Vision starring an attractive white woman as its star

Over on TV we broke new ground with the announcement of Batwoman which features an attractive white woman as its star.

Ant Man recently added an attractive white woman as Co star to its movies.

So yeah, I'm all for diversity but these studios need to figure out there is more social demographics out there than Stupid men and attractive white women.
Hey apparently you're claiming to be a black lesbian woman when you're actually a tubby old white guy

What's up with that?

I looked through a list of 200 marvel women. There was maybe 10 black women. The one name that did strike me was M.

Black, Lesbian, Mutant, Muslim Woman.

Monet is gay? Huh. I guess I haven't read her in a comic for a long time. (Probably not since Generation X.)

Must be a crappy list, I could almost name ten myself, and I'm shit. M, Storm, Ms Marvel, Ironheart, Misty Knight, Shuri, Claire Temple, Ms America, Spectrum, uh...Black Widow. ;)

The obvious choice for a movie is Ms. Marvel. Hits a similar dynamic to the current Spidey movies.

Misty and Colleen would be a great movie as well.

Isn't Ms Marvel Pakistani-American? And Miss America (Chavez) is Hispanic.

Like the black people that live upstate they ain't the same kinda black people as the ones from the hood.
Neither can catch a cab in NYC at night, skin tone trumps class in the USA

It’s tougher to fit diverse fields into Marvel in particular because so much of their money comes from the viewer’s attachment to the source material. There are non-racist motives not to want to change the demographics of existing favorites.

I don’t think any boycotts are in order. I’m kind of torn because on one hand I agree the movies should be more diverse but in the other hand I’m against imposing our own politics onto other people’s art.
They can create new characters. All established characters were once new, and we are no longer in an era that assumes the human default = white male or white female (ok some of the audience no longer tolerates this mindset)

I've done the math and I can reasonably certainly say that about 80% of people who watch MCU movies have never picked up a comic book in their life.
I gave up comics after I discovered boys, probably a huge mistake!

They should make some famous white male characters into a black female just to piss off the incels.
Marvel has a perfect one:

https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Riri_Williams_(Earth-616)

Iron Man 4: Iron Heart

Main characters could include the eponymous heroine, War Machine, Shuri, and some token white character :D (maybe the kid from Iron Man 3!)

Make Riri a not-snapped American teenager obsessed with Tony Stark and Wakanda.

I always thought of Zoe Saldana as one of the leads in Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Marvel's one of the last places we should really be looking for lack of strong female or ethnic representation. So much so I found the 'Ladies of Marvel' bit in Endgame a bit jarring and unnecessary.

But I do agree it's definitely (past) time for more non-white stars, both male and female, especially in the MCU which after 23 movies still only has Black Panther in this category (and Shang Chi on the way and no non-white female stars even announced).

Lets do the math! I'm using the United States racial breakdown, for simplicity, since Marvel is an American company
White: 72%
Black:13%
Asian 5%

Hispanic is 16% but 65% of those are White and the rest is "Other".

so that's 9 films with white men (one Hispanic)
9 films with White Women (one Hispanic)
3 black led films
and one Asian led film

that adds up to 22, I did some rounding.

Don't have time to figure out how all the individual films break down, I'll be back later.

And there are other characters who could potentially be race bent for the mcu without issue. Songbird and Squirrel Girl are two that I would love to see get their own films and nothing about their stories requires them to be white.

Lets not get rid of yet another redhead, shall we, after the whole little mermaid situation? My wife needs someone to dress up as on Halloween.

I don't think she's in danger of running out. Especially since she can still dress up as Ariel or Squirrel Girl if she wants to.

Also, good effort on the math, I guess, but it isn't particularly relevant.

Actual Racial Breakdown of all Title characters, not including the Avengers or Guardians
14 1/2 White men (but only 7 separate characters)
1 1/2 White women (AntMan and the Wasp splits between the two)
1 Black man

The Guardians are more diverse than they seem at first glance
In Volume one there's
2 white guys (Quill and Rocket)
1 black Hispanic woman (Gamora)
1 Asian man (Drax) Bautista is half Filipino
1 racially ambiguous (Groot)

Volume 2 adds
1 white guy (Yondu)
1 white woman (Nebula)
1 Asian woman (Mantis) Klementieff is Half Korean

I don't even know how to count the Avengers beyond the first film.

I think there is a difference between the actor and the character. Rooker, Cooper, Bautista, Saladana, Gillan, Klementieff and Diesel aren't playing humans or people of their own races. Heck, Cooper just does Rocket's voice! The cast is a very diversified group of humans. The characters, well the only human character is a straight, white male.

I can't believe we are playing racial math to determine who has value. America is so fucked! Do people loose points if they are American white/black vs say British white/black? Jason

They were on the list.

10ish black women, 4 green women, some Asian Women, a few middle Eastern women, 1 native american woman and 200 attractive white women.

I’d like to see an Ironheart movie.

And I really want to see Storm finally done right. She was worshipped as a goddess, actually depict her as being worthy of it. Someone like Beyoncé, cast her.
