At this point, I think it's aware enough only to wield the ship in a clumsy fashion of controlling main systems. I don't think it can fully reason and speak as much as they need it to, it doesn't want to die, or be left alone. (The time crystal probably showed it the future where the crew came back, and went to the future).

Maybe it would have gone the other way, taking them whether they liked it or not.

Well, if it's sentient and sapient, would you blame it for wanting to live and not being suicidal? There has to be a point where an artificial intelligence starts to have as much of a right to existence as a biological one. On the other hand, if it can be reasoned with, it could surely be convinced to go on autopilot and enter the wormhole by itself.

Edit: oops, a huge brain fart on my part. Obviously there was no way to know if it could be convinced to shut itself down or not.

That's exactly what I'm getting at.

Of course a living being would want to live. But that same being could also be convinced to willingly sacrifice its life for the greater good. That's not being suicidal, it's being noble.

It's an emergent being, higher concepts like nobility are all well and good, but it's operating on a survivalist level.

It would depend on the programing.

    Anything's possible.

I was half expecting them to pull some shit in the finale and have someone like Q show up mid battle snap his fingers and "poof" no more control or baddies.

Q then says "oops the continuum miscalculated how this would all pan out."

Imagine the fan wrath that would have caused.

I like Q a lot too but not sure I would have liked something like that to have happened.

Something else I considered between parts 1 and 2 (when I thought Po was going with them) is that many of the people choosing to go with Burnham are 'runaways' in some way or another. Saru left home and thought he'd never return, Tilly ran away and almost started a new life under a fake name, sounds like Owo left her community after her rumspringa, Detmer has considered quitting ~20 times, Spock's going to spend the next decade 'running' from Sarek.. This is a group that isn't afraid to leave everything they know behind to do something they need to do (or think they need to do).

I say this all the time! Half the people I know in my town have John De Lancie stories and half of them aren't even fans.

I had to look that up because it sounds fake, but it's not even the 3rd craziest thing in his character's biography!

Google images is really letting me down right now

Yes, someone told it to compute Pi to the last digit, and it did. Then it printed out the answer, burying the requestor under 90 tons of printer paper, crushing him/her.

Haha OMG you looked it up. I used to watch the show in my younger days. That's not the half of the crazy on that show. One of the regular bad guys put chips in people's heads to control them, One woman became possessed by a demon and that's only two of the crazy cray cray on that show.

I think the sphere just wanted its data to be indestructible come hell or high water, it didn't think about possible side effects like the extinction of all sentient life in the galaxy. It's like when you have an employee that's too zealous and not very smart and you tell them that for an hour you'll be completely incommunicado. It never occurs to them that there could be exceptions to that rule. Of course one could argue that it didn't occur to you to warn them about that but then you thought you were speaking to a human being, not a damned automaton!!!

No matter what happens, there is just something in this reasoning that makes me irrationally angry. Okay, I agree there is poetic beauty and nobility in self-sacrifice for the greater good, but I can only stomach it when one does it on their own volition without prodding. I just can't see convincing a sentient, sapient being to kill itself for whatever reason as anything but plain old murder. I just can't put myself in a mindset where anyone could vindicate the right to tell anyone whether they should live or die. Send the sphere data to the future? I have no problems with that and that's a very poetic and noble sacrifice on its part. But outright telling it to kill itself for the greater good? That's a huge no for me. Possibly the hugest I can imagine.
