I would say they are so that since the novels are authorised by CBS.Novels aren't any more canon than fan fiction. You are more than welcome to accept that explanation, lots of people do. But, from a canon perspective, both exist.

Was Control ever mentioned before in the shows or is it a novel idea that they adapted? Is this the first instance of stuff from the books being made canon?
Think that was a different thing..........."Control" was a @Dayton Ward thing wasn't it? From the Destiny books.........oddly enough. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Could be wrong. It was mentioned (as "Starfleet Control") in Tomorrow is Yesterday.
Even the Discovery tie in books have been tossed out now........Remember the adventure when the Discovery and Enterprise went on a mission together before the show premiered? That's out the window now. Still a great book...........but definitely not canon now. They aren't canon. The writers here will tell you that.
All alternative universes for me, because I thrive on wanky fan theories.Even the Discovery tie in books have been tossed out now........Remember the adventure when the Discovery and Enterprise went on a mission together before the show premiered? No wonder they have counselors on board later on.![]()
If I had a white foster or adopted sibling who racially abused me in childhood our relationship would be done from that moment. I was racially abused as a child by my peers, took me decades to forgive the bastards..er my fellow students. And if all she's been upset about all these years is shouting bad things at her brother, well fuck me I must be a terrible person.
It also really gives Amanda's exit in JtB an even harder twist of the knife.
'There must be some part of me in you, some part that I still can reach. If being Vulcan is more important to you, then you'll stand there speaking rules and regulations from Starfleet and Vulcan philosophy, and let your father die. And I'll hate you for the rest of my life.'
In ten years, hair fashion on Vulcan changes to what we see in Amok Time or maybe they wear hair pieces at their weddings. I so hate that TNG bowl hair cut, what culture would have billions wearing the same hair style? Please! It's because of the dorky Vulcan haircut. They out to spice thing up a bit on that planet, fashion-wise.

Control is a novel by David Mack, DISC is using the concept
Control is a novel by David Mack, DISC is using the concept (which I dislike...oh well)
So is this the first time the shows have adapted content from a novel for canon (besides the two nebulously canon Voyager novels)?Control is a novel by David Mack, DISC is using the concept (which I dislike...oh well)
It wouldn't have known that till it had at least gotten a nibble out of her.Why was Burnham running from the creature in the Forge? She was quite safe. The monster fed on local, green-blooded flesh, surely...
