By the way, I think that this point made by Melissa George is relevant to the discussion.

In preparing for the role of Vina, George says she watched the original performance by Susan Oliver and reveals that she actually re-recorded some of the classic dialogue from “The Cage" for the new Discovery episode. “They did put some of my voice on top of hers to kind of meld the two together,” she says. “I couldn’t recreate her acting because so much has changed the way we act today. There’s a different kind of inflection. But I wanted to watch it and pay homage to her and the way the character felt.”

People, the original series was made more than 50 years ago. A lot of things changed. If, for example, the actors were acting the way they did at the time, it would look like a parody. If they were wearing the exact same costumes, in HD it would seem a cheap Halloween party.

It's not impossible, however, in isolation, to make 60s style acting and filmmaking work in a modern serial if the filmmakers are willing to put in the work. Some examples of this kind of hybrid production can be found in the Duchovny series Aquarius as well as Streaming series Good Girls Revolt. Mind you, they aren't scifi shows.

I think it was the “apparently you’ve betrayed us” by sabotaging the spore drive and sending big messages that revoked that card. My assumption is that Tyler will eventually choose Discovery over S31 and rejoin as a regular crew member for the third season.

No, they were referring to Tyler sitting alone in the Mess Hall PRIOR to the sabotage, whilst members of the Discovery crew who would have sat with him as of the end of S1 were not sitting with him here. Either he's distancing himself ("got S31 stuff to attend to here guys, soz") or they are shunning him due to his new allegiance. But either way S31 seems to be a dividing line between him and members of the crew that didn't exist before.

It seemed like even Pike was putting out feelers about Tyler's loyalties. Almost as if he was hinting at offering a transfer. Of course, this was before Tyler was framed by Red-Airiam, so now more people on the ship are eyeing him as a traitor again.

Ash is in a kind of 'damned if you do and if you don't' place right now, but I'm presuming things will eventually correct themselves. In the past I have wondered why the writers were glossing over what he's been through, how can he just seem to move on and not fall apart over what was done to him last season, but now I think the writers *are* aware of how lost and stuck he is and will address it.

I think it needs to be pointed out, now and then, that it was not Ash who killed Culber. He never would have done that voluntarily. He was also a victim, his person violated, like Hugh. He was essentially tortured and had his whole life taken from him and then his reputation ruined and blood left on his hands - none of which were of his own volition. Seeing Hugh is just as traumatic for Ash as the other way around.

I'm amazed he's even functioning at all, to be honest.

I'm pleased that at least they allowed Tyler to respond to Hugh and say, "Who do you think you're talking to." Because the parallels are so glaring at times and yet I see a lot of people still talking as though Ash killed Culber and deserves a beat down.

As if we haven't had multiple examples of characters in the other series who attacked their fellow crew members, even attempted murder, while influenced, possessed or dominated by an external force, who were immediately forgiven and treated the same once they recovered from the incident.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they didn't just reset what happened and that there are long terms consequences because of the serial format. I just hope that eventually they'll give this character a break. Or, conversely allow him to go off the deep end to resolve this inner tension. I think Saru was correct in seeing that both men needed some cathartic release.

Time will tell, however, whether the writers will treat the subject matter with enough sensitivity to get Tyler back to a more stable, productive place. He's desperate for a place to belong, which is why I think he's leaning in on the S31 thing right now, but suspect that his loyalties ultimately will be with Discovery in the end. I'm grateful for his scenes with Pike, because it means he's forging other relationships on the ship. Pike challenges him but is also a welcome stabilizing factor.

not necessarily doctor's, no. and not necessarily fingers.
Playing Doctor, at the very least, always involves fingers at some point.

Beyond that, a thorough examination is quite impossible without extensive gear.

Anyways...,

I don't think Pike was convinced that Tyler was responsible for the sabotage, nor for the secret messages.
Pike slightly hesitated when taking Tyler's badge and only confined him to his quarters not the brig.

I think he's playing the long-game attempting to draw out the actual culprit.
(of course we now know that it's Airiam)
:techman:

They need a self-help group, those two.

On a more serious note: I like what they're doing with Tyler's character.

Spock's still a Lieutenant. His log entry in his quarters on the Enterprise lists him as "Lieutenant Spock."

Oh, one thing I meant to say last night - Gulber 2.0's going to be a self-harmer, whether they include it in the episodes or not. Also Stamets should ttally move on, cos he deserves better anyway, and has done all along.

And Saru was totally light to let Gulber 2.0 and Tyler have a strop
