Picard Show character breakdowns

TOS was diverse for its day. DS9 was diverse for its day. DISCO is diverse for right now. Not a terrible record.

 

I'll amend and state that diversity has been moderate, but it has not always been presented well.

Much like my statement.

 

That they talk about it so much, makes it worse though. For example they made such a big thing out of Burnham being a female lead and what it means for female representation. But then they gave her only one measly female main character companion, while having 4 main male characters in the first season and 5 in its second season now. They should rather keep their mouths shut than spout empty words.

I give you TOS. But the others were at best as diverse as other shows of its time. Star Trek is definitely not daring to go where no series has gone before. They are only following trends and then also only hesitantly.

 

I think that's my big thing. Star Trek is very hesitant to do anything with diversity beyond lip service at times.

I think Burnham is great but even I was disappointed that Georgiou didn't get to keep being captain. I love Captain Pike but that's personal bias because he's been my favorite captain for years (since I was 11). There are many episodes that embrace diversity, but I can point to a lot more that have many unfortunate implications.

 

Discovery had a similar ratio, and yet it's a complete Woke-fest.

This Picard show will be the same shit, same 'creatives' involved. It's the opposite of sexism, if anything.

I'm guessing Connie will end up being Picard's protege and surrogate daughter.

 

Sounds good. Picard needs that as part of continued character development.

 

If memory serves, Picard does not have a great track record where it comes to protege and surrogate daughters/sons. Should make things interesting.

 

He was the only good thing on that show. I saw the season 2 premiere and dropped it. Really stupid show.

 

I actually really like the characters description, especially if we get Romulan protagonist, kinda throwback to placing Worf in TNG and something we unfortunaly missed with T´Rul in DS9.

 

Eh I wouldn't really say so. Also literally all the humans are just Americans aside from Georgiou who isn't a main cast member unlike other Trek shows which tried to pay lip service to the idea that Starfleet wasn't just an American organisation (though ENT came off extremely US-centric especially it's awful intro. Seriously not having Sputnik or Yuri Gagarin wtf were they thinking)

 

Funny. Some folks (like this reviewer) thought TNG was also full of woke-fest when it first came out. Yet today many folks consider it to be the gold standard of Trek adventures:

Looks like she would. It would be interesting how Picard would've mentored her, as he has no children of his own and his only nephew Rene died in the winery fire before he became an adult.

Heck, anything with Data - the Kaylon incognito that doesn't go around splattering all biological lifeforms -is always a win!

But even 60s Trek was so-called "woke" (Pike's comment about Number One has a different perceived context today than it did in 1964, since most 20-somethings either slept through history class or didn't actually live in the time period (case in point are the folk who say "the 1960s were the best!!!!!!!!!" while ignoring all of the civil unrest, the small countercultures and cults that popped up, assassinations and murders and other things (such conflation of entertainment with the real society is so obviously dim it's beyond sentient belief)... or slag the older shows off as "too slow", "bad acting", or whatever excuse they'll find for the 2 minutes they won't sit through it.

 

I really enjoyed these as stand alone episodes, but I'm not sure I'd want this as a format for a 7 season show.

 

I don't think we'll be lucky enough to get 7 seasons out of Sir Pat... That being said, it doesn't even sound like a good format for anything beyond one season.

 

So far it sounds more like a vanity project for Patrick Stewart (which is what I feared it would be) rather than some type of closure story for Picard. I look forward to seeing him driving wildly around in a jeep.

If the Picard show is anything like the 2 part Gambit episodes then a Vanity project would be a great description for it.

Not necessarily a bad thing though. Picard is a great character, Patrick Stewart is a HOF actor and the 2 cast members that have been announced are very capable.

 

Both Patrick and Kurtzman have said they’d like to have more than one season.
