I was being polite about one of the reaons why I think there was a possiblity of other places being saved.
The writers chose Richmond, Indiana as the location of the church. Richmond, Indiana is located in rural Indiana. Rural America is not known for its diversity of beliefs. Yet, we are shown a wide range of beliefs, many of which would not be known to a resident of Richmond.
The city has a population of about 40,000 in a county with a population of 70,000.
And why was Richmond attacked? There are no major military bases near there.

I'm not sure why so many people insist on painting 'Rural America' as this sort of caricature of bumpkinism and close mindedness....last time i checked that particular feature of humanity was an equal opportunity infection regardless of your degree of urbanization.
To wit:

there is a Mosque in Richmond called "Masjid of Richmond"
There is a Reform Jewish Temple called "Congregation Beth Ahabah"
there is another place called "Ekoji Buddhist Sangha"
there is a place with Hindu affiliation called "ISKCON of Richmond"

Need i go on?

Stereotypes are just as bad when they are applied to rural (i.e. largely "White") America as they are to any other group.

The spore network animates all life everywhere.
Dead people seem to have an echo of themselves within it.
Stamets is connected to the network by the tardigrade DNA, and see's Dead!Culber.
A spore landed on Tilly.
She surmises that the asteroid can connect to the network via dark matter and therefore dark energy.
She's hit by a discharge of dark energy using an energy beam on the asteroid.
She starts seeing dead people the same way Stamets does, in this case, someone she knew from childhood who died a lot earlier.

I mean, it's not like they didn't leave a fuckton of bread crumps about this.

Also we see in the main season 2 trailer Stamets using the same sampler device on her to remove something energy based? from her, and a leaked image of a baby tardigrade.

The only thing I'm waiting for in terms of mystery is them trying to retcon the Nexus as a tendril of the network "extracted" into normal space by an ancient race that just went it's merry way blowing up ships afterwards.

I've heard May called a Betazoid in this forum, but I have no idea whether there's official confirmation or not. It ought to be a revelation, though - until now, we have had little idea about when Betazed and UFP got introduced to each other. And that ought to be a significant moment, considering how telepathy is treated in TOS still. That is, it's an esper phenomenon, not a species trait...

I also read Connolly's death as commentary on mansplaining white-male privilege— i.e. it has no place in this show and in society.

Yet the writers have Burnham do her own round of mansplaining in the very episode, explaining WWIII to Christopher Pike. (Okay, call it womansplaining if you must, but it's the exact same phenomenon anyway, and to insist otherwise just paints one as a sexist pig. :p )

What got pulled out looked quite a bit like a lump of the heroes' big pet rock all right. What happened to the bit that Tilly extracted in this episode? Did it get jammed inside her somehow?

Or then it's that ancient race's version of USS Discovery. Or more like their Queen Mary II, with all the creature comforts imaginable.

Damn, I wish I'd thought of that I like it.

The proper word isn't "womansplaining", call it what it is: "Nagging". ;)

“Super Burnham”?
Yeah was wrong to use that criticism for this ep...Far more appropriate for the Premiere! Watched it again and I was off target on that one! The Tilly stuff was still shite though!

Telepathy amongst humans is individual, such as Mirand Jones. However, There were a number of telepathic races encountered during TOS, including the Talosians in the Cage.

if she'd taken the necessary time to get into proper military attire all those dudes on the planet (including starfleet personnel) would most likely be dead when she reaches the bridge.

Exactly. I don't know if they'd be dead if she took the time to change, but the clock on that figurative ticking time bomb situation would have ticked much farther.

Seriously, if the writers had wrote it that we see Tilly-in-her-sickbay-gown come up with a solution, then had her next on the bridge with her uniform on telling the others, I would have been laughing that the writers made Tilly waste precious time changing before she passed her solution on to others.

don't forget the time needed to get her hair down

It's probably just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Richmond, Indiana is located on US Route 40, which is an ideal highway to take if you're an invading army cutting a swath through the US on your way to the Rockies, presumably to meet up with troops coming from the west coast and/or coming in over the Arctic Circle by air through Canada. If you landed near its terminus in Atlantic City, New Jersey, you could send elements north to take New York City and south to take Washington DC, and then the rest proceed west.
