They should have taken Jacob with them.

Youngest person doing Starfleet command training? How old IS Tilly?

Dead people are talking to Tilly. I bet she won't tell anyone.

I like the new ready room. It's one of the rooms either side of the bridge I guess?

Also, when the Edenites (or whatever they called themselves) were coming up with their hybrid religion... surely any religion that didn;t features angles was proven wrong and should have been excluded?

Called it!

Yesssssssssss.

Also: Spock in a psychiatric facility? Cannot. Fucking. Wait. :D

Mitich did play a different character in "Brother" (Lieutenant Nilsson).
Was she really named on screen, or is that what name she is given in the stage direction (e.g., "Lt. Nilsson and others look at captured asteroid in awe...")

By the way, I'm old enough that when I hear the name "Nilsson" I automatically want to say "Nilsson Schmilsson."

I will pay money if Pike and co bust Spock out of the "Federation Funny-Farm" as per STIII.

"Yes, poor friend... I hear he's nutty as a fruitcake"

And some Federation security mook mouths off to Saru with a "don't get cute, lofty" before getting a Kelpian roundhouse.

Excellent episode, one of my Discovery favourites so far. It had the vibe of a classic Trek story while maintaining an up to date feel and the benefits of the characters and writing that took a step up last week. I loved the interplay between science and faith, the emphasis was just right I felt, and I'm not frightened of contemporary religion in Star Trek. Also the moral dilemma faced by Pike and the resolution he took played well and believably. I'm liking his character more and more.

A solid 9. Still leaving room for improvement guys if you're reading this ;)

Interesting that they aren't retconning the dates of WWIII from First Contact despite us being twenty years closer to that date - however, sadly, it seems more realistic now than it did in the 90s.

Yes, his actions are deliberately plotted out. It's not difficult to see why Christopher Pike became Captain of the Enterprise, and I love that we're getting a good look at the non-beepy version of him in action.

Yeah. It's pretty sad. If anything, these days I think the 2050s for World War III sounds late. Hopefully I'm wrong and it never happens. Worrying about how to reconcile Star Trek's canon when we actually get to the Mid-21st Century will be a good problem for whoever's making Star Trek at the time to have.

Ok now I'm imagining the character portrayed only with beeps.

I liked the Shatnerverse book series and I own them all but I would be very surprised if they take the Preserver route, at least I doubt it at this point, First Federation could be an option though in future once we have more information.

The biggest issue would be copyright issues as the only time the First Federation has ever been referenced in the canon TV shows is Balok/Fesarius in ToS but at least it has been shown, I think the Preservers are a creation purely for the book series.
The Preservers were first introduced in the TOS episode The Paradise Syndrome. They were the ones who took the Native Americans off Earth in order to save them from extinction, kind of like the Red Angel did with the people on New Eden.

Is that picture of the Iconians taken from STO? If so, it's not canon. ;)

Yes, but many things in the past that weren't canon have now been made so. Especially story points from old novels as well as the animated series.

CBS collaborates closely with Star Trek Online, and there's no reason they can't use the idea and design of the Iconians. Besides, the similarity is almost certainly too close to be anything else.

Anson Mount seems to have just slipped in and made himself part of the show with no painful 'new character transition' whatsoever. It hit me while watching New Eden, he might be the strong point of the show right now. Possibly helps that I was a huge Hell on Wheels fan.

Gave the episode an 8. Captured the spirit of Trek we all remember. It's a minor gripe that the premise seemed a bit too early TNG hokey in that I think both audiences tastes and TV in general have evolved a bit, but we'll see where this red angel thing goes.

And they need to dial Tilly back down to like a 5.

The Aliens are designed to look similar to angels, it's just a coincidence.

The body shape on this one is nothing like an iconian other than being humanoid.

Just because the body shape isn't the same doesn't mean it's not an Iconian. Human body shapes are all different. Also, Discovery may have used the STO Iconians as a starting point, but then did their own thing with them. They've redesigned everything from TOS to make it their own, no reason to assume they wouldn't do it with the Iconians too while keeping the general idea of the design.
