Could have left the guy a history book. :)

Because that turned out so well in "A Piece of the Action." :)

Seriously, I liked that the PD situation here was ambiguous and open to interpretation. Pike made his call, but another captain might well have justified making a different call. I think the PD works best, storytelling-wise, when the situation is NOT clear-cut. Better that it pose thorny dilemmas than be treated as a hard-and-fast rule.

Lord knows Kirk had a more "flexible" approach to the PD than Picard did . . . .

I took it as Pike respecting it because it meant something to them and was a valued element of their society. Even if he disagreed, he wouldn’t openly say it because these people probably depended on it. That’s why he gave the guy the power source in the end. It was a trade, but he understood that it would mean something to him and give him hope for a better future.

Pike is a good guy.
This. I saw it as an olive branch, and the way they listened to Michael even though she was saying something they probably fundamentally disagreed with showed they had no desire to harm anyone who didn't fall completely in line.

They seemed like fairly reasonable people given what they had been through as a society.
Exactly. I was waiting for the "KILL THE BLASPHEMER!" trope we've seen in Trek in the past, but it never came. Instead, it was more like "okay, if that's what you believe, that's your thing." It was quite refreshing. Also, Anson Mount is still doing a bang-up job as Chris Pike.

Burnham was wise enough to frame her science as a religion to the colonists, rather than openly dismissing religion altogether while promoting science.

We already knew from the stained glass windows and the woman elder's chronicle of the colony that the colonists' views on religion are very inclusive and tolerant of many varying views about faith.

True, but that has never been a true indicator of how people would react. Hell, most religions include some form of "love thy neighbor" in them, but look at the millions of people who have died under the boot heel of fundamentalism.

...and the Dutch."

I gave this one a solid 9. I'm still loving the little touches that come from elements that make for Star Trek stories (science vs. religion, off the cuff thinking to save a planet, etc.) and the music has been markedly much better so far!

Anson Mount as Pike was an incredible choice in casting, and one that gave this series the jolt it needed!

Another episode I will watch several times, and I never really said that about the first season!

I took that to mean that Tilly is in the Mushroom Highway.

Or that the Mycelial Network can now enter our plane of existence. That, or that was one of the Red Angel aliens communicating with Tilly and helping guide her towards the solution to save the humans down on the surface.

Really good episode. I enjoy it much more when its not Burnham focused and she is just another one of the crew rather than being Wesley Crusher lite.

My only question is - what war were they involved in or talking about with the nuclear weapons? The equipment and set up made it look like it could've been around the 90s.

See, now I can't be the only one who really loves the concept of the Mycelial network, right? I mean, it really is going boldly where no one has gone before? Many of us want Trek to tackle higher concept sci-fi, so that when it does, we get to experience something we may not have considered before? I love that.

It's such a drag to have a main character who is complex, capable, and involved.
