It turns out Pike never took over Discovery, and the "Pike" we know is just an Angel in disguise who is using Discovery to get back to its people, who have sent him on some kind of scavenger hunt.
It'll turn out that Spock has Pike safely locked in storage somewhere.
Easier to do when they had 24 episodes a season. Even 15 isn't really enough to go off on any whole-episode tangents.
we had at least one in season one and honestly I could do witout meaningless self-contained filler episodes

And that Burnham helps Spock become who he is in TOS (or something like that)
And of course who he is is rigidly logical
So, Spock has these nightmares, thinks he understands that these things are spiritual angels, wants them to show him the meaning of life, eventually finds out that they’re not, instead someone dies as a result, he eschews faith and sentiment forever, becomes logical Spock

I'm still thinking it is Lorca, especially considering both Burnham and Spock has seen or dreamed about it.
Lorca became semi-omnipotent thanks to the Mycelium fireball he was thrown into. He has stewed for thousands of years for a chance at revenge against Burnham and her family.

I think she was having a real vision of one before Pike ran in and snapped her out of it. The figure had tentacles sticking out the back that gave the appearance of wings, hence the "Red Angel" name. I don't think Pike, even in a spacesuit, could be mistaken for a red angel.
I think these things are aliens trying to understand the concept of faith, and so in true Star Trek fashion, have decided that experimenting on other sentient beings is the best way to explore it.

I thought that was suspicious too. Maybe Mirror Lorca doesn't have something to do with this, but maybe Prime Lorca is one in need of rescuing... or made contact with the Red Angels. Hell, how cool would it be if the Red Angels were actually part of the Mycellial Network being led by Mirror Lorca, who pretty much became a god after dying the in the Mirror Universe, locked in a battle with Prime Lorca (who we'll discover was killed in a similar fashion by Captain Killy in our universe

Connecting Burnham's telling of the african creation myth at the beginning of "Brother" with what we know about the Iconians, my guess is that they visited Earth and at least many Alpha and Beta quadrant planets in the past. They might be the origin of many religions and legends, among them the tale of the Klingons killing their gods. Which may play a role when the Klingons appear in this season.
It's the Archangel Michael trying to break into another universe to get Chuck's attention.

Doesn't the design for the iconians from Star Trek Online look similar to the Red Angels?
I believe this season is the time when the Federation first hears of them, which leads to the archaeological search for relics of them, we heard about in "Contagion".
They may have evolved in the time after they used gateways to get around.
