Coming back to the site after a tumultuous half-year, I'm just so glad to be watching Trek again. This episode had me completely floored, I loved every minute of it. To be honest, it felt so much of an improvement over the last season for me that now I'm kind of embarrassed for not really understanding why so many people had found it lacking back then. Don't get me wrong, I loved season 1 as well, but if I consider all the 8-10 ratings I gave last year, this episode should be way off the scale. Everything felt grander, as if the show was more confident in itself and found its voice. Even if we didn't learn much more about, say, Detmer of Owosekun, they still felt a whole lot more alive to me than last year... I mean, I don't quite remember the last time Airiam had lines, plural, even if it was only technobabble this time. The characters interacted with each other like real people, with Pike's grand entry to the ship being an uninterrupted sequence of comedy gold for me.
Let's hope this episode was indicative of how the rest of the season will turn out to be. It seems as though Discovery is finally getting there.
My only grievance was Connolly's character... he was obviously set up to be killed off from the start and the moment he started playing Commander Contrarian to Burnham, I already knew he'll die then and there. But then again, Star Trek has had these officers who were way too cocky and stubborn for their own good since the beginning.
