Not a fan of this serialised approach on Star Trek. I’m already getting bored of the red angels storyline and there is as many as 14 episodes about it to go. I found myself cringing at everything that came out of Tilly’s mouth. I didn’t need to see what seemed like 20 minutes of flashbacks about Spock and Burnham. The only plus is the visuals; style over substance.

2/10

Watched it this afternoon. I voted 8/10 purely as I'm greedy and expect better things. :p

I loved it anyway. It was quite a step up from season one, and I hope they sustain it. The show certainly grew a personality in the off-season. :techman:

I forgot how amazing the SFX were, and how much I've missed Tilly!

What I didn't like was the death of blue-shirt guy: Came out of nowhere, had no impact on the plot, and no one really cared about it anyway. It was only there to sgnify "danger". Which is okay - but goddamn have his colleagues have a scene of mourning afterwards!
^^^
Sorry, but this EXACT thing is VERY MUCH TOS/TOS era. (and I loved it just for that. Yes, of course we knew at least one of the two 'extras' with Pike and Burnham was going to bite it - and once the Science guy IGNORED Pike's order to 'tuck in' twice - you KNEW it was going to be him - but as to afterwards, yeah, the 'He's dead, too bad, let's move on...' is VERY TOS. Besides Pike did mention to Burnham when she wanted to rescue him that he already lost one officer today, and didn't want to loose another. ;))

I agree with this. What Pike said, to me, was enough to satisfy acknowledgement of the loss. They were in a crucial situation. No time or place for eulogies, burials and laughs over drinks.

I'm watching it now, enjoying it so far, but the science officer death was really lame and how it was played for laughs was dumb, you could see it coming a mile off. Some of the humour is good, but other times it is just jarring Marvel quippy stuff. I like Saru making a joke about his tendril things, but then within the same few minutes you have the bridge crew acting like children and full out panicing for humour. The overall scene was great, but I could really do without all the failed attempts at humour, I'm not really sure where all this snarky humour is coming from in recent years, I remember TLJ had this problem (among a lot of other problems ofc) too.

Sometimes it seems the writers forget it is supposed to be a professional military.

I don't think that his death was played for laughs. They were having an argument about the mission and how he was ignoring her warnings, and he ignored them and got killed. My only small issue was that I thought his death was really telegraphed because they made his character such a cocky jerk.

Sounds like they were in contact with Starfleet, just too far out to make it back in time and ordered to continue its five-year mission. They should be able to just download the specs and start replicating, er uh... fabricating the new uniforms at any time. Why Pike decided to toss on an "old uniform" is beyond me. And why he used to wear turtlenecks, and Kirk's crew will also wear the same turtlenecks in 8 years is a mystery never to be solved.
Captain's prerogative.

I was going to give this episode a 10, if not for the completely unnecessary and frankly insulting recasting of one of the greatest Star Trek characters. So I give it a 3.

That big of a "Christopher Pike" fan, eh?:nyah:;)

Also anyone else think the Bridge crew gushing over the Enterprise at the start was a bit odd? It just felt weird to me. Awkward.

Hey the Enterprise Red Shirt with Pike gave the Discovery a compliment as well with:
"Hey, know I know where Starfleet is spending its pennies..."

Which prompted Pike's reply of:
"Hey, covet not thy neighbor's Starship..."

So, I thought it was okay; but recall even from TOS proper; the 'Starship/Constitution Class' was ALWAYS considered special.

From TOS S2 - :Bread and Circuses":
http://www.chakoteya.net/StarTrek/43.htm
CLAUDIUS: You're a clever liar, Captain Kirk. Merikus was a spaceship captain. I've observed him thoroughly. Your species has no such strength.

MERIK: He commands not just a spaceship, Proconsul, but a starship. A very special vessel and crew. I tried for such a command.

So, again, if ANYTHING it's a coda for the era we're in with ST: D (And that's IMO a good thing.)

wait, I'm confused. So, you're already bored with a storyline that used up 5 minutes of this episode, which is actualöy not that much and less than the usual B-Plot of 90s Trek, BUT you want more substance over style? Are you sure you can handle more substance, because I'm afraid you might get bored with that even faster.

I don't take anything you say seriously.

Mitich is still on the show, she's just playing a different character now.

Just starting to watch the first episode, its a shame no one noted the ignorant racist connotation of natural black hair being something that needs to be tamed. They should have left the young Michael's hair natural in Season 1 and not that false straightened bowl cut. The actress hair looks good in the introduction scene that I just saw.
Folks talk about Toxic masculinity which does exist, well so does Toxic eurocentricism.
Ok the opening credits are coming on now.

Still. You're talking about Spock going from this:

To this:

And then to this:

Not exactly linear.

Skepticism is warranted.

Though, visual reboot.. for those who have accepted that.
You've never grown a beard and then shaved it off?

I also noticed he was a recipient of or nominee for the Carrington Award. Isn't the Carrington Award a medical honor bestowed upon a physician who's made a significant career achievement in the medical sciences? DS9 never indicated that the award was bestowed in other fields.
It's an award for Cat fighting.

How the hell is that racist?

OK, Haters. I'm loving Sarek on this show. I don't see anything that contradicts the < 120 minutes of screen time we saw of him in the last 50 years.

If anything I think his relationship with Burnham informs his relationship with Spock. It seems that Spock is his responsibility first and his child second. Burnham is just his kid. So he and she can actually be closer. Or at least have less in the way.

The way that he answered the question of when he had last spoken with Spock was heartbreakingly matter of fact. It was remarkably emotionless and matter of fact.

Disco still isn't quite scratching my Star Trek itch. But it's at least a watchable show.

EDIT: Oh, for the continuity junkies, they made a point of giving the Cage crew compliment.

Also nice nod that the fortune cookie that Pike finds refs "The Cage".

This episode was great and a great return to Discovery. Great action and character moments. There is more lighter moments when it comes to the dialogue but not at the expense of the drama and tension which was a concern I had. It fit and worked. This felt like a good evolution of where season 1 was heading and left off. Season 1 hasn't been forgotten and it does still inform a lot of what is happen now with the characters and I'm really happy about that.

I enjoy the more focus on many of the other characters but it wasn't at the expense of Burnham being the lead which made me happy. She's still the main character and I don't think that should change. The episode showed it didn't have to change to give more attention to other characters as well. I always said the bridge crew weren't a focus because that wasn't where the story was located. Now the story is located more on the bridge of course it makes sense we'll see more about the bridge staff.

Can't wait for episode 2!!
