OK, best second season opener since "Amok Time" (and that one cannot be topped).

Anson Mount was great.

Wilson Cruz has replaced Shazad Latif in the opening credits, interesting.

Bryan Fuller listed as executive consultant.

That was a great season opener. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the season turns out. I’m really looking forward to seeing Spock show up. I’d like to see how he’s portrayed.

Pike isn't really all that different from the way he was portrayed in "The Cage(TOS)." He is more jokey and outgoing but this is three years after the mission to Talos IV and that's a lot of time for a starship captain to get used to his crew and become more at ease, plus the events on Talos IV could have had an emotional impact on him. He's still closer to the Jeffrey Hunter version of the character than the Bruce Greenwood take from the Kelvin Timeline.

He seems different to me, but in a very logical way. The Pike we saw in "The Cage" was unhappy/depressed because of what happened on Rigel VII, to the point of wanting to leave Starfleet. A couple years have passed since then and he may have recovered from the trauma of that incident.

Is the screen ratio different? Looks like it has a movie aspect ratio now.

Yep, they're going for the cinema look. Wider aspect ratio with anamorphic lenses now, which also changes how light looks on screen. (You can see that out-of-focus light sources have oval bokeh/blur rather than round, as they did in Season 1).

The TOS era is BACK! (And I love that fact :))

I was teetering between a 9 and a 10; but again because of the action, just plain good old adventure, and the few honest surprises (IE it thankfully wasn't like TNG Berman era trope Trek where you know what's coming, even in the 'action' sequences); and the fact not all the crew is in 'unimind' sync (all thinking the same thing and often finishing each other's sentences) I gave it a 10.

It wasn't what I expected (in a good way); and I LOVED the crew interaction with themselves and with Anson Mount as Christopher Pike. Hell, I even liked the arrogant and overconfident science officer - yes, TOS era people were not all well adjusted Utopians. He was extremely overconfident and paid the price in fine TOS tradition, even if he wasn't sporting a Red shirt at the time.

All in all a nice mix of character interaction, adventure, and in the end everything turns out okay with a few casualties along the way = TOS era Trek at it's finest.

I will agree with the posters above who thought the amount (and reuse) of Burnham's flashbacks was a bit overdone (IE number of times), but it's a minor nitpick for me. Overall I thought the cast (and their characters) gelled together nicely and looking forward to seeing where they take this.

If it was a medical ship, why would a engineer stay behind and not a doctor? I assume they would be a few onboard.
Also that’s the Starfleet insignia, not the Federation one.

No kidding. But it more than likely inspired the 'course correction' for Discovery. This episode definitely came off as very much aware of the complaints regarding S1. I wouldn't be surprised if the lighter direction was also a CBS mandate. They saw what worked elsewhere, and recognized what Discovery was lacking.

Reminds me of when WB decided to push 'fun' as their buzzword for the new DC films, after Batman V Superman disappointed. They saw what worked for Marvel and were reactionary.
The producers didn't look at "The Orville" - they got someone who LIKES TOS and decided "Okay, we're in the TOS era, so lets use more of what made TOS work with audiences. I wouldn't credit Seth Mcfarlane's TNG with toilet humor as affecting anything related to this episode. Hell, the first two episodes of "The Orville"'s Season 2 took some of the worst aspects to TNG (IE the it's a family drama you could see in any 90ies era dramedy, BUT ON A SPACE SHIP.)

Everything on this episode showed someone took the time to rewatch TOS - and reintroduce its elements for ST: D Season 2.

Gave it a 9. Would have given it a 10 but I need to save that for the episodes that are up there with 'The Inner Light', 'Duet', etc.

Off the top of my head:
- Pike is awesome
- Tilly steals the show
- humor from Saru
- Tilly
- humor in general
- Connelly was an a**hole
- Red Shirt woman is awesome
- Tilly
- young Spock & Burnham scenes were beautiful
- good action, visuals, Science
- L'Rell mention
- Tilly
- Engineer/Doctor is an interesting mix for a character
- Pike's recognition of "Captain Saru"
- 'The Cage' fortune cookie reference
- The TOS musical cues
- Tilly

Really good stuff. Can't wait for next week, & can't wait to see where this "Red Angel" stuff goes.

Well let's see:

I miss Lorca (bring back Prime Lorca!) but I like Pike. But I figured we would like him.

What's with the huuuuggge spaces in Sarek and Amanda's residence?

Spock was a BRAT. Obviously, at that point, his Vulcan training has failed. If he's like this in school, no wonder the other kids give him shit. Plus - bad wig. I can see him being jealous - but sending a monster at his new foster sister and slamming the door on her? I can't think Sarek and Amanda would have let that passed without consequences.

Uh, yes, the old asteroid bit where the good guys survive.

Spock's room on the big E was huge too.

Sarek wanted Spock to learn empathy? Uh, he has a MOTHER who obviously has that. Duh, Sarek.

Tilly was a bit annoying again. I think it's a huge mistake to put her on the command track.

Well let's guess guys. Is Stamets REALLY going to leave? ;) And how the heck are they going to bring back Culber?

I liked Tig.

It was a pretty good episode, minus a few flaws. It had lots of action and I wasn't yanked out of the story by anything. I'm liking the "lighter" Disco better. Of course, I've never been a fan of the Klingons.

Forgot to say, Burnham and Saru continue to be my favorites (other than Sarek, but I've always had a soft spot for him.) Saru's line to the crewmember when that person was staring at his threat ganglia was hilarious.

Great episode
I am still not a fan of the Fringe.... I mean DISCO intro.
I love how they portrait the captains, first Lorca and now Pike.
I would love to follow Pike on the Enterprise.

Just finished it. Now I enjoyed season 1. I think it really grew better over the course of the season but this episode was in another league. It was nice to see some of the other characters on the bridge have been given character and I hope that continues over the season. Pike is fantastic and just bringing him in has brought more fun to the series. I cannot wait to see where they are going to take us this season.

Wow what a difference. I give it a 10 but because of last years recap in the very begining it went down to 9.75 (just for reminding me of how bad it was), and then mentioning the improbability drive, it dropped again to 9.5. Still it was worth the wait. Story left me wanting more. Im looking forward to seeing the rest of S2.
Then in next weeks preview, looks like their going to use the improbability drive. Crap! Here we go again. So much for putting it in storage.
