Nope.

Either you accept interpretation an intrinsic element of art or you don't. Any preestablished foundation of the medium - especially when it's a person - is irrelevant because it's not something one can actually quantify. It's the same reason Geddy Lee can play with Yes and not have to sound like Chris Squire.

You don't make the rules ;)

Nimoy's Spock is the most iconic and recognizable Star Trek character in pop culture. Pike is a minor footnote.

They aren't the same, you know it.

One is obviously much, much larger shoes to fill than the other. The later is largely still undefined with only about 2-3 hours of appearances.

Someone said it was on Facebook Live now, but I don't know anything about that. I just get an error message when I click on AfterTrek in my CBS app. I tried this morning to check some old eps, and just now.
Apparently, the show as we know it isn't coming back, to be replaced by...

Starting next week CBS will be hosting weekly Facebook Live chats with Star Trek: Discovery stars, producers and creative talent. These Facebook Live events will be streamed on facebook.com/cbsallaccess each Friday, the day after each episode of the second season of Star Trek: Discovery is released. The first of these events will be on Friday, January 25th, the day after the second episode of the second season debuts on Thursday the 24th.

They live streamed from the red carpet of the premiere tonight.

Why? Holographic candles are going to be a thing. Probably sooner than you think.
Perhaps but not in the established Trek lore. We know that technology developed differently there.
Also at the start when they were trying to contact the Enterprise. Why didn’t they just zoom in on their viewscreen window and use cue cards? :)

time for the demand for jelly bean lights and paper printouts to occur.. again.. for the *teenth time
No I mean because of things like the eugenics war and WWIII that their earth had different priorities.
I don’t mind the occasional hologram but not constantly. Just looks silly.

I just want to say how happy I was to get more Detmer and Joann Owosekun tonight. It might have been long, but that set up and sequence into the asteroid field was probably my favorite moment of the series so far. Every one was working together, Suru got some fun comments, and the two of them up front brought it. Maybe they won't get character development, but man it was just so much fun and I was watching it and smiling the whole time. Please I hope we get more of that duo together as the season goes on.

Really enjoyed the episode and am super excited for the second season. I know I'll have more thoughts upon rewatch...

I've been thinking about the dynamics of Sarek and Amanda's family. I think between the visions of the Red Angels and the loss of his older half-brother Sybok (I'm assuming Sybok left/was kicked out before Michael came into the picture), Spock wasn't particularly interested in being bothered with some random human girl.

That makes me wonder about Sarek's motivations for fostering Michael. It doesn't make sense for him to have brought her around to develop Spock's empathy... I could, however, see him thinking she'd be company for Amanda, his human wife on Vulcan with a child who's half-Vulcan.

I think fostering Michael was about Amanda, not Spock. And Spock probably resented that.

Speaking of resentment, Michael going through Spock's room and his stuff when he wasn't there is such a big sister move. He's going to be pissed.

And that's just the Sarek-Graysons! Lost going on in this ep. Can't wait to watch the season unfold.

Seems that it was way too easy for Burnham to access Spock’s quarters and personal logs.

Regarding the logs, it seems likely that Spock left his console unlocked. The dialogue indicates he intentionally left a paper trail.
SPOCK'S VOICE: In the event of my death, I have encoded it within this audio file. This may be my last entry aboard the Enterprise.

He expected the log to be accessed.

Great first episode to the new season. Lighter and funnier, and still has the cinematic look. Looks like they haven't skimp much on the special effects budget.

Thought the red shirt would die first, but that science officer was annoying Good riddence.

Spocks room has the essence of the TOS with those metal grids and keepsakes.

Little nod to Lorca with the fortune minus the cookie.

Overall enjoyable episode. Happy to see the enterprise in a modern take. Star trek never looked so good on TV. I think this season will be better than last, and I enjoyed the last one.

Came here to say 3 things:

1) Micheal and Spock DEFINITELY boned.

2) Enough with the damn free falls Kurtzman!

3) So part of the season at least is about some sort of search...for... Spock?

2) To be fair, Kurtzman didn't write this episode, and actually hasn't written the teleplay for any episode of Discovery.
