I think it was more effective as a surprise to us.
Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I would rather not have had a scene where we see Burnham calling back to Saru telling him the plan with Tyler's "spacing", and all of us knowing exactly what that plan was. That would have been a much less effective scene.
I agree that it's far better as a surprise. I do wish there was something a little more that foreshadowed / explained it. Maybe not as bad as Worf having the secret off-screen discussion with the Klingons in "The Defector"...but something that made the outcome a little less confusing.
As it stands...it's easy to see what happened in retrospect. But, at that very moment...it was confusing!
