It's called a story arc, something common on modern television. The days of one-off stories is basically dead, audiences want more now. Now we get an ongoing story where characters go and develop. They don't learn lessons that they forget next week anymore.

1. There's nothing more "advanced" about serialization. These things go in cycles. Serials were considered to be the standard during the radio play and movie serial era of the early 20th century. By the mid-20th century, they began to be held in low regard, and episodic TV came to the fore. I wouldn't be surprised after another few decades of dominance of serial entertainment if we shift back to episodic once again.

2. Even with the dominance of serial TV today, episodic TV still has a niche. Black Mirror is popular, for example. And most procedurals remain essentially episodic.

3. Even if we're talking true serials, the only must is to serialize the character development. There can still be "plots of the week" which stand largely on their own, as long as the impacts of the decisions made in the episode have ramifications for the characters further down the line. Thus, a serialized show could totally do a giant amoeba as a one-off, perhaps using it as an excuse to get two characters trapped together and to deepen their interaction (whether in an antagonistic manner, a romantic manner, or somewhere in between.

Defiant. Hoshi used it to maintain her grip on power. she might never have left it. Anyway thats my thought.
That would be awesome. It's too bad they've already mentioned there is an Emperor and not an Empress leading the Terran Empire. But we can hold out hope she's referenced or something. It would be so delicious to at least hear about how she was eventually usurped in the MU.
MU Hoshi would be what... 130 or so in the DISCO timeline??

Re-watching right now. Culber to Lorca: "Suddenly you care about protocol?" Culber's thoughts mirror mine.

"I could cut out your tongue and use it to lick my boots"!!!??? What in the name of H.P. Lovecraft? Get the f--k on up outta here. TILLY? That line brought me out of my seat. Wiseman did a great job turning on a dime from RU Tilly to MU Killy. How funny were all the nicknames? I don't think we even heard all of them since they cut away. She sure did take to her little Terran ruse quickly, didn't she?

Fantastic episode. A 10, no doubt.

Feel bad for any folks who insisted Tyler wasn't Voq. His relationship with L'Rell seems tortured and genuine. Agree with others who think that Tyler will need to die now after killing Kulber.

So, we still don't have confirmation of what has happened to Stammets. Seems he must have somehow visited the MU on one of his jumps and actually saw the palace? Don't know.

I wasn't sweating the loss of the short skirts and mid-drifts. Agree that the Terran uni's and armor were awesome.

I just posted a few days ago in another thread that we'd likely never see Burnham as captain and here she is in the big chair, albeit in the MU.

Someone posted lamenting the dearth of outside shots of the Discovery and the long zoom in from outside into the bridge. This episode contained outside shots of the Discovery, Shenzhou, and long zoom in. Ya gotta wait for it folks.

Badass moment of the episode had to be the turbolift doors opening just in time to show Burnham's bridge crew her former first officer's body collapse to the floor followed by their exulting her. Couldn't help but wonder which one of them might take a shot at her next. I love the MU.

Hope we get to see MU Discovery in the RU and the real Captain Killy.

At this time, per IaMD, Empress Sato should still be in charge of the Defiant. Wonder if we'll get any word as to whether she has been overthrown or whatever. It would be too much fun if she were the empress. But I'll be satisfied if it turns out to be the person some folks are speculating about.

42 pages in 24 or so, hours? What is wrong with us?

My first post!

Enjoying the show, would only like to see more from some of the other bridge characters esp Keyla and the other woman on the helm (whose name I don’t know). Agree with a previous comment that the ship looks a bit sparsely populated otherwise

And what’s with Saru not switching to Empire uniform and insignia?

Saru is an alien. In the Terran Empire, aliens are considered the enemy.

Terrans are xenophobic, given how Saru's people seem to behave they may have been hunted to extinction. Although I do hope the Emperor is Georgiou and Saru is her love slave.

Saru is probably in his quarters and hoping that nobody from the Mirror Universe notices that the Discovery has an alien aboard and not confined to the brig, tortured or executed. I can't blame him.

Discovery seems like the strongest first season of any series. We haven't really had any duds yet like that TNG episode with the extremely racist planet that Tasha had to fight on.

DS9 wins IMO. Mostly due to “Duet”. Discovery is second.
