Discovery Renewed for Season 2

Not saying this timeline is unreasonable or unlikely, but if I were a CBS exec, it would worry me. There little chance a lot of the people who signed up solely for DIS are gonna keep their All-Access subscription active for this long given the lack of other compelling content. And what they have in the pipeline doesn't sound like must see TV either.
My hope would be that since sets are built and ready, cast is signed (and they may have asked for priority consideration over other projects the cast may be getting put their way) and it would be down to scripts and other normal pre-production work (as opposed to creating the series from scratch), CBS will make a push to start filming mid-2018. They have a hit, and they're going to want to strike while the iron is hot, unlike Paramount's pace with the movies. The resources are there, they should be able to start filming after the cast has had some down time to relax and recuperate.

If Orville doesn't get renewed for Season 2 and Discovery does, they'll shit a brick.

I imagine someone will. I don't actually encounter those folks on the Orville FB group I hang out on; of course, Doug Fitz and many of his compatriots have me blocked.

I agree, there's no compelling reason not to cancel your subscription until the second series airs. But that's CBS's problem, not Star Trek's. They suffered reputational damage because it took significantly longer to arrive than they initially announced.

I'm sure production of the second season will be smoother than the first, having learnt a lot of lessons, but it's still a huge production.

The only thing I DON'T like about Orville are the people who try to use it as a counter-balance to their hatred of DSC.

I sure hope Orville gets a second season...and maybe those people will knock off the foolishness.
I hope The Orville gets a second season as well, so there are two good space series on TV! Fox has renewed some horrible shows in their history, with much lower numbers. I'm thinking The Orville will get at least a second season.

I like Kirk and Picard
I like Star Wars and Star Trek
I love B5 and Deep Space Nine
Orville is fine and so is Discovery

I just am not right in the fan wars.

I'm sure CBS is already considering greenlighting a second Star Trek TV series which will run during the time when Discovery is off the air.

Mind you, this was a clusterkark from beginning to end. It just so happens as big an expensive a disaster as it was, it's the only game in town for CBS for their stupid service.

The Orville is getting a second season. Mostly to appease MacFarlane, but just as important, its not doing that bad in ratings. If Seth picks up some live-action acting skills between Season 1 and 2, I can see The Orville getting only better as time goes on.

While that's a possibility, they may be gun-shy about that and not want to saturate the market. Maybe cover another base and do some form of animated series, be the first CBSAA exclusive animated series.

I don't really "get" modern TV ratings, so I have no clear idea of what the likelihood is - everything looks very, very low to me.

I mean, based on the ratings I don't understand how the CW stays afloat at all. What are the budgets on things like The Flash?

I certainly hope The Orville is renewed, because I enjoy it very much and don't care at all for Discovery. But I wouldn't try to handicap the odds.

I think the biggest factor will be cost for The Orville. Despite ratings...can they justify continuing to make a series with that budget?

I hope so.

I am sure they are thinking about it. But depending on timeline/setting of the new series (can they re-use any of existing STD sets) it may take at least two years to get off the ground.
