It really does hearken back to why I found (and still find) TOS the most entertaining Star Trek incarnation. The characters a Human, and not perfect - but when the chips are down still put aside their differences to work together and get thorough a problem (as was evident with the U.S.S. Glenn Engineering Room situation. They don't completely trust Burnham - BUT they trusted her enough to toss her a Hand Phaser once she stated what her plan was <--- And that helped them complete the salvage recovery and get back to the shuttle.

This

While I don't wish for everyone in the series to be an interminable a-hole to everyone else at all times (which isn't the case here currently, BTW)...I do appreciate that these are pepole...real, relatable people who you can watch grow and change for the better.

If that's what the show is doing...I'm really looking forward to it.

Am I the only one who thinks that gushfest called "After Trek" genuinely sucks?

I love the host, and the nerdist podcast, I really do. Especially doing a podcast myself, I can really appreciate it.

But the After Trek is just such an eyeroll.

I actually like it for the behind-the-scenes featurettes and getting to know the actors a bit more.

Otherwise it's meh for sure.

I like the concept but the host is super annoying.

Anyway, is it supposed to be on Netflix? I can see only the first After Trek there.

Why does Lorca need surgery? Can't they just give him some shaded contacts?

When Kirk was surprised that Spock had read "Alice In Wonderland" Spock says his mother was particularly fond of Lewis Carroll's work.

You know, at first when Alice in Wonderland came up, I thought it might be a throw-away reference, and it seemed an odd one, but the more I think about it, it might actually serve a purpose later down the road, like when we encounter the Mirror Universe. I feel like they're priming us with details but not revealing what they're for until later on.

I'm confused as to what happened to the shuttle pilot at the beginning. She goes out to clean the spores off the hull, and her tether suddenly breaks. Miraculously, Discovery is right there to save the shuttle. Were they headed to Discovery in the first place?

It almost seem like it was all a plan to make the prisoners disappear in an "accident", so they could be take to the Discovery to be experiment subjects with the new drive. But this doesn't make sense, because Burnham is still in communication with Sarek.

Seems that my personal rating of these episodes is the exact opposite to the prevailing opinion of the forum.

I'm pretty much with you on that. The first was my favourite (new Star Trek! And Exploring new planets! Yay!), the second okay (no fan of the war arc, but nice battles & tactics), this one was my least favourite (nice characterwork, otherwise only set-up without twists or resolutions).

Wisdom of the Crowd.

Or, simply put, people who didn't like it in the first place tuning out. People who didn't like the first episode probably aren't gonna' spend bucks to see more of that. That leaves only the people who really like it, and the people who are mixed on it but willing to give it a chance (me) with it. Averages go up then, but at the cost of less viewers.

I wouldn't claim otherwise, just pointing that they're assholes. I don't like those.

In all seriousness...I like that everyone is sort of on-edge and not pally-perfect.

It gives us the opportunity to see them grow into a cohesive unit and grow as individual characters (or...not).

I love seeing character growth as a result of the events in the story. I'd much rather see that than just start off with everyone as everyone else's trusted pal.

I think it bodes well if this is where they want to take the show. Only time will tell, though.

On reflection would probably give it an 8! Enjoyed it! The science stuff was a bit over my head but the whole Aliens vibe on the doomed ship was good fun! Tilly not as annoying as I feared - Stamets bugged me at first but I liked his speech about Lorca and I warmed to him more after that! Saru continues to be my fav character - Isaacs was class and I liked the chemistry between him and Landry! Have to say they really need to sharpen up those opening scenes - though! I thought the stuff on the shuttle - apart for being barely audible sound wise - was very weak! Real potential here though! Looking forward to meeting Mr Tyler next ep hopefully!

Trek is many things. I'd love to see them define Trek in such a way as to include all the previous episodes but exclude Discovery.

Except you don't get to make that decision. Trek is Trek. If you don't like it, well, there's nothing you can really do about it.

I was just thinking back to the scene in the USS Glenn engine room. Her plan was to distract the creature while the rest of the crew got away with the equipment they needed. After she fired the phaser it turned on her right away, and she just says "ssshit, that worked!" and I started laughing.
Agreed - it is wholly unrealistic for an entire crew to be averse to expletives, especially every single crew we've seen since the very beginning. I realize the meta-reason was the network censors, but in-universe, I'm sure it was a part of the Roddenberrian "evolved sensibilities" nonsense. People blurting out curses in the heat of a moment just feels right dammit! :D

in fact Sloan said that section 31 protected the federation in many ocations, it would not be wrong to see one of those times also I want to know more of them, they are part of the fleet since before the federation existed
Which means their primary loyalty is to Earth and Starfleet, not necessarily the Federation. They’re only still around by the Federation’s time by being underground. Sloan said they have no facilities, so they’re like an unofficial Secret Society at a college...or the KKK...they keep their beliefs to themselves, and act out whenever they can get away with it, and not be caught by Starfleet proper.

I should clarify also that I really like the actress (Rekha Sharma I think?), it's just her character I find to be an asshole. Just to clarify. I don't want it to seem like the actress herself isn't doing a good job, because damn.

Anyway, yeah, there are always going to be assholes. I like that no one is perfect, not even our vaunted and much loved (by me) protagonist. I bet even Tilly has a flawed, dark side... nah. She's too adorkable. Anyway, yeah, I say this as a good thing.

Damn right! :D
Believe me, if I had a creature like that on my rear end, you couldn't keep track of the number of fricatives coming out of my mouth as I zipped down that Jeffries Tube.
