Spoilers Game of Thrones - Season 7

Somehow, I doubt the various armies will play much of a role in defeating the dead. It seems more like quidditch in the Harry Potter movies. Sure, there are a lot of players doing interesting stuff, but the only thing that matters is which Seeker can catch the Snitch. In other words, it's probably just going to end with Jon killing the Night King.

Which means also sacrificing Bran I expect, if some of the time travel theories are correct. He appears to be becoming set up for another fall. I expect the last stand of Westeros to be at Oldtown, with most of the rest of the population, including the armies, wightified. Sam will discover the NK's secret weakness at an opportune moment. Whether Bran's continued existence is the vital component remains to be seen.

100% of the time travel theories I've heard are pretty much terrible. He certainly has at least one more card to play there, but if it is just to create some kind of enormous predestination loop to be "oh so clever" then I'd sooner just have Jaime push him out a window again.

I'm sure that the actions of the key characters will play a large role but I think the armies will too. Westeros is going to be the most militarized it's ever been. It'll have the usual forces plus the Unsullied, Dothraki, 2 Dragons, and the Golden Company. (Yes, it's possible the GC won't fight on the side of the living but who knows.)

I don't think that's all coincidence. Those armies will be used against the undead.

Finished season 7 today - have to say that while I liked it reasonably well, I didn't enjoy it as much as season 6. Things seemed rushed, twists more or less out of the blue, time is a bit warped, and there was quite a bit of stupidity all around. This season definitely would have needed 1 or 2 more episodes to flow better. There was enough plot to be covered, more relationships to be explored.

Take the stone throwing to show the army that the ice would hold them. Urgh. Take the little time it needed for Gendry to reach the Eastern Watch, send a raven and Daenerys to come flying to the rescue. Then Tyrion really believes Cersei's pledge to help? And the whole Sansa-Arya-Bran vs Littlefinger, I don't know it felt like there was a scene or two missing. What I don't quite get is why everyone should be shocked about the enmity between Sansa and Arya - they were never friends to begin with. So that they don't quite see eye to eye isn't surprising even after all that's happened (maybe especially because all that's happened).

And let's not talk about Jon and Daenerys' scene - it was always going to end that way (and frankly, I don't really care so much about the aunt/nephew-thing, there are worse pairings), but there was no build-up, no chemistry. Somehow, once Daenerys knew her dragon accepted Jon back in ep 5, it was all a question of time. Wasn't there another discussion about Jon's potential parentage in an earlier season? I seem to remember Littlefinger for one to at least suspect, but wasn't there someone else? Varys? Tyrion perhaps, and that's why he's making that face outside the door? Anyway, all that talk about heirs and children... Well, Jon and Dany don't have to fight it out, let their love-child sit on the throne.

Poor Uncle Benjen, just a prop to save his nephews... Good for you, Jaime, finally seeing through Cersei's loyalties (and actually do something about it). What's his reception going to be in the north, especially with the news he's going to bring?

Would have loved to see all reunited at Winterfell (Sansa and Tyrion ought to meet again at some point) for the ending of this season. The Wall bursting works, too, though. Not sure the dragon is beyond help - but at least, build a lance like the one that wounded Dany's main dragon back in ep4 out of dragon glass, and that threat's gone, if Dany and/or his sibling-dragons (or maybe Jon) can't bring it back to their side.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the grand finale.

So since there's no new episode tonight, I decided to pick up the books and reread them and in Ned's first chapter there's this exchange between him and Robert:

"Likely they were too shy to come out," Ned jested. He could feel the chill coming up the stairs, a cold breath from deep within the earth. "Kings are a rare sight in the north."
Robert snorted. "More likely they were hiding under the snow. Snow, Ned!"

That ain't even my emphasis, it's like that in the book.
GRRM is such a troll :D

Wow, that's brilliant.

I've been thinking about reading the books again and see how much foreshadowing I can pick up this time around. I'm much more immersed into the world of A Song of Ice and Fire than I was the first time around (where I had only seen the first three seasons) that I think I'll better appreciate the finer details this time around. Well, except maybe the Ironborn storylines (aside from Theon and Asha). :p

The biggest hammer was the Night King tearing down the Wall.. while it was expected and had to happen it still was an amazing scene, especially with Zombie Viserion lighting the Wall up (how much continious Dragonfire can they spit out before they have to "refill"? That was one long autofire mode..

So where does this leave everybody?

.

I think it will be the Night King himself who kills Cersei, an ice blade through her abdomen--a final insult she could have prevented..

I've been thinking about reading the books again

In the immortal words of Shia LaBeouf: Just Do It! ;)

I've wanted to reread them pretty much every season after the finale for the past few years, but always decided not to because "Winds release date will be announced shortly..." fool me once, shame on me, fool me... yeah, can't get fooled again :D

But I have wwwwaaaayyyy too many books to read as it is and I'm way behind on my reading. :wah:

Conversely, I keep saying "Once Winds has a release date, I'll start reading the first five again..."

I don't have the reading time to go back through all the books again, but I'd love to see a reread thread here with some kind people pointing out interesting bits and foreshadowing.

I really do need to read the books again. The last time I read any of them was when ADWD first released back in 2011, and it had been years before that when I'd last read any of the four books prior to it, too.

Does anyone know if all those HBO leaks and hacks that happened contained any information on season 8?

I'm going through a reread and I want to occasionally check some stuff on the internet but I'm slightly paranoid of googling myself into some spoilers. :D

Not that I've heard. I didn't read the leaks myself but don't ever remember any of the stories suggesting that they went beyond the most recent batch of episodes.
