Agency of Female Characters

Maybe they had to reveal themselves to him as he wouldn't leave Angela Martine/Mary Teller?
Since we never saw it on-screen, nor was it ever mentioned, there is no rational basis to assume it ever happened.

I read a fanfic about Angela's stay on the Shore Leave planet. She thought up a replica of Robert Tomlinson and daydreamed a blissful domestic life for the two of them... and when it came time to return to the ship she refused to leave.

That's a nice sort of ending. Wonder why I never thought of that?

I dunno, an inability to move on from bereavement isn't a good thing, albeit it was very recent here. I think leaving with an acknowledgement that she knows where to find him if she needs him (I.e. In her heart) would be more fitting.

I should have specified that Angela did end up leaving, but not without a lot of angst. Someone pointed out that Robert could only be as real as her memories made him, and could never really change and grow. In time her memories would drift, and the illusion would become less and less true to how the real person was.

Mears and Tamura have both failed to impress me as far as agency goes. Mears does at least have the commendable trait of not being insubordinate but I suppose even insubordination would have given her some agency. Sigh.

Sixties television could never have shown Tomlinson like that if for no other reason than the particular channel showing the series might not have shown Balance of Terror yet and as we know the character was not originally going to be Angela Martine! Wonder if Angela's middle name was Lisa or that later on she married another crewman whose name was Lisa? Then again she does look very different in Turnabout than she does in BOF and SL!

On the issue of "Shore Leave" and proper reporting, let's note that "proper" isn't supposed to be a feature on that planet. McCoy assuredly dies, and what does Kirk do? Have a big laugh with a fairy looking like his old bully Finnegan!

The planet is supposed to be fun. Death is supposed to be fun there, too. The last thing in anybody's mind should be grieving or being proper about it, and indeed this is what we witness. So I see no objection to Martine dying, too, and then being ignored just like the poor slowly cooling McCoy. There must be something in the air, is all.

The objection is that we didn't see it happen. Insisting she did means that whoever insists it happened must have seen a different episode from the rest of us.

It's not "improper" for Rodriguez to not report something that didn't happen.

Oh, I dunno - the argument about Martine not being listed among the living is pretty convincing, and not on the issue of writer intent but on in-universe "reality".

It's not "improper" for Rodriguez to not report something that didn't happen.

But Rodriguez is improper in any case, as stated - he's leaving the woman behind, wounded or dead. And my point is that being improper is fine hero behavior in this episode, all over this episode, just like being a racist warmonger, murderer and rapist wannabe is fine hero behavior in "Day of the Dove".

Landon could kick. Thompson had transformative qualities. And Zahra could detect chintzy-looking models.
Landon was great. Just very dumb. Did Zahra even have a phaser? I forget now. I'll find out soon.

Did any yeoman? Mears perhaps, before Spock converted the phasers. But only inside the shuttle! And since Spock's always in possession of his tricorder, who needs the yeomen at all?
Just Mears and Landon were armed from what I recall. Yeomen should have been used more appropriately in episodes involving diplomatic missions, accompanying Kirk instead of Spock, rather than being the only women on random landing party duty. A yeoman could have been used instead of the records officer - I mean in a world of advanced computers would you really have so many secretarial staff? Mears' sole purpose on the Galileo 7 mission was seemingly to record their conversations, as if the shuttle wouldn't be doing that anyway. She didn't even seem to be a decent technician.

Just watched the Devil in the Dark! Great episode but apart from the Horta, the only other woman appearing in any capacity is a foxy woman who minces past the camera in the closing scene on the bridge.

Did Zahra even have a phaser?

I thought she did because she had the belt on, but it looks like it only held a communicator. She fell back behind the guys when they stunned the attackers.

Yeoman Tamura didn't have a phaser, but she handled a disruptor like she could take care of herself.

It's interesting you should comment on this. This episode lead NBC -- yes, the evil, sexist network Roddenberry loved to complain about -- to request that landing parties include more women.

And not many in the third year at all. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, KirkSpockandMcCoy, Kirkspocknmccoy week after week after week.
It's odd if they did have a request to include more women that they went ahead and included fewer. Don't we have Uhura twice ( plus getting kidnapped off the ship), Thompson, Palamis, Romaine, and Mulhall? That's not impressive for over Forty episodes.
