New Phaser and Rifle Revealed

That's a great deal more finished and detailed a prop than the TOS guns were. I like it and the communicator much better than the Abrams versions.

Now I'm looking forward to their version of a Constitution class ship.

It looks like the TOS prop painted black and with the antenna snapped off. It's like one of those fan updates for the TOS Enterprise where they just add a few more tiny details.

Why would they keep the Fed props so much the same as the 1960's show but change everything else?:wtf:

Mostly due to the TOS era phasers looking like actual functional weapons, and not keyboard hoovers with LED's stuck inside.

Looks a lot better to me, especially when side by side

It's got three barrels (er, lenses), so I'm guessing the little one is for 'tool' setting (which is 'using the phaser for things besides shooting people), the medium one is for 'stun', and the big one is for 'remove from premises'.

And it looks nice. Will probably look even nicer when the schematics go up online.

Nah, the three lenses are for different colors: red, white and blue.

Because everybody on board the ship will be French.

If it's the same function as the "lasers" from The Cage, then it's beam intensity. Whether that's automatically "fine cut", "stun" and "kill" or that has to be selected somewhere else we'll find out soon.

I love the pulse rifle. It's the first Star Trek weapon in years that looks somewhat like an actual weapon, rather than a heavily stylised toy gun.

I remember seeing a low-budget sci-fi show years ago (I wish I remember what it was), and their laser weapons had three settings: "stun", "kill", and "blast". I also remember making fun of that last setting, because if you "blast" a person, you are most likely also going to kill it.

"Blast" just seemed to be superfluous overkill.

However, the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. The "kill" setting (obviously) is designed to kill biological organisms, while the "blast" setting is probably needed to blow up walls and vehicles and such. Barricaded door? Blast a new one.

Or it has three charged "chambers", depending on how many of the rifles chambers are charged, it makes a bigger hole in something. Somehow I don't think this model comes with a stun setting at all.

Well, almost every model of phasers have a "stun" setting, from type 1 to type 3. So, it would be odd to not, honestly.

How should a 24th century-era phaser pistol and rifle be represented?

Edit for correction: 23rd century [Thanks, Jesse]

Based on existing evidence the pistol should be a "laser" and look like what is in The Cage. If "Phaser rifles" existed in that point in the timeline then they would probably look like what Kirk had in WNMHGB. Or at least something similar to those two items.

Well, the ship phasers in TOS had a stun setting too.

Which could knock out a city (strangely not disrupting electrical and radio technology in the process?). I'll go with it being easier to stun people from orbit since you can deliberately let the atmosphere reduce and scatter the beam to aid the effect.

Lasers were retconned by TOS
