If the wireframe is actually the final ship, then great.
If it's still that 70's monstrosity, no thanks.
Dang it! The Discovery still looks like an ugly duckling...
Weren't there rumors they re-designed that ship? I don't see anything new, except the colour of the engines (now red, originally blue), and that the shuttlebay is now open. Anyway...I might get used to it...
Somehow THIS looks a lot more modern and better! Why U not the hero ship??
Hope they transfer some of those angular lines and curves to the Discovery.
At this point I think they are messing with us for the Discovery design. With awesome looking sets and uniforms and great looking new ship, there is no way Discovery will remain like that. It's probably pre production photos or just early concept photos.
And it's no wonder. They are likely keeping main ship - Discovery - a secret until the first episode goes online.
More importantly, the new production has to stand up to 4k scrutiny. Things that would have been impossible to see back in the old 480p days will stick out like a sore thumb today.@Timo this new incarnation of trek has to appeal to a brand new audience, many of who will have only the most passing knowledge of star trek. So the production values need to be modern. The aesthetics should complement previous shows to some degree, but also needs to make its own identity.
Actually according to the screenshot of the CGI shipMore importantly, the new production has to stand up to 4k scrutiny. Things that would have been impossible to see back in the old 480p days will stick out like a sore thumb today.
That's true but not really relevant to the point I was making. The USS Defiant bridge in ENT is a good example - they essentially rebuilt the old TOS bridge the way it should have looked if they'd had a better budget and were building it for HD.More importantly, the new production has to stand up to 4k scrutiny. Things that would have been impossible to see back in the old 480p days will stick out like a sore thumb today.
Sooo, basically you're agreeing with me?Actually according to the screenshot of the CGI ship![]()
It is the same monitor overlay as the Arri Alexa camera.
see other shots from other productions using the industry-standard Arri Alexa (XT or Classic) camera . Here:1 & 2.
The first link says "A look through the Alexa 65 EVF" which looks almost identical.
We see the Monitor is displaying LOG-C Gamma setting and the Electronic Viewfinder is using a Rec.709 LUT (Look-up Table) .
They are shooting at the industry-standard cinematic frame rate of 23.976 fps and we are looking at Camera "A" and it is recording.
They are filming in UHD [Ultra-high-definition television also known as Ultra HD]
which is 3.2k SYS which would be Apple ProRes codec. Since we saw the clapper slate of the Visual FX at the start of the video this may be a Visual FX-only camera shooting footage for use in monitors on the bridge to be used in-frame of actors while they are actually shooting a scene.
I'd like to see a behind-the-scenes monitor-shot of live-action actors to confirm all is being shot at 3.2k UHD resolution.
So it is safe to say all cameras are probably shooting in the same resolution for a UHD deliverable. I do wonder if they will use some an Arri ALEXA 65 a large format camera with 6.5K resolution which is what Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was shot on for some Trek DSC Visual FX work?
Yes I do not know why they would need to shoot CG with a camera at all. This is why I'd like to see live-action being shot with the camera and see a behind-the-scenes shot of the monitor from that.@jefferiestubes8 why would they need to film VFX elements rather then render them straight to video, if it's being (presumably) inserted into a screen "in-frame"? unless it's for a "zoom into the display" shot?
I sure hope that's not the case. Leave that generic looking ship in video games where it belongs. It's great for a secondary/background ship (which it is) but not for a hero ship which needs enough character to stand out for a new TV show. That's a very common design we've seen a million times before.

Eh. You misunderstood me. I like the basic shape of the Discovery just fine. It has character.
it's the execution that sucks. Hard. She looks alright from the top. But basically from every angle where you can see her from below her belly she looks like crap. This needs fixing. Wether it's more details, more curves, less brutalistic edges, less blank surface, I don't know. As it stands, the Discovery looks like she belongs into a saturday afternoon Disney cartoon. The "other" ship not.
From her basic shape I like the Discovery more than the other ship. But what we saw in the teaser and at Comic Con was unfinished crap. This new John Eaves ship has less "character", but the CGI model already looks a lot more "finished" than the Discovery - despite lacking texture and everything.
Thing is - they need to make the Discovery look better. Not rework her from scratch or anything - I like the basic shape and design - but currently, she looks like crap.
Ok, this has been explained several times online already....
What we've seen of the Discovery sofar, is not set in stone. The teaser we saw, was a rushjob mesh of a work in progress design. People still don't get this. It wasn't the final design.
