2009 widely regarded as good, STID bad, Beyond very good...

It's so funny that people continue to talk smack about ID, but it did better than Beyond. Personally I'm leaning toward deciding that STID is STILL my favorite of the three. I loved Beyond, but there was almost no emotional depth. It was very TOS episode true, but I'm not sure that works in a movie without having deeper character growth. Leaves the viewer coming away feeling like something was missing. There was only very shallow character story lines, but mainly just Spock and Kirk's dilemma about whether to stay in Star Fleet. They talked a lot before the movie was released about it being about questioning the Federation, but that wasn't all that clear in the movie either since it wasn't some alien race against the Federation but one of its own. So answering this right now my list stands at:
1. STID
2. STB
3. ST 09

Despite it's various controversies, I still think STID is one of the best blockbusters of the last decade. I can pick it to pieces on here but that first time viewing at the cinema left me pumped like nothing I'd seen on the big screen since T2. Beyond may have been the trek film I really wanted to see as a fan, but Into Darkness is a rip-roaring piece of entertainment in my view, despite my agreement with most people about its numerous shortcomings.

I don't want to live on a planet where Into Dark 'n' Edgy is considered better than Beyond and 09 by "film critics".

I think they're fine action blockbusters that look and sound amazing, but to me at least, they are missing a little something.

I love 2009 for getting me and many others into all the different shows and films, but it's popcorn... and it's hard to subsist on a diet of popcorn. The original films (as well the TNG films to a greater degree) are popcorn too, but they have a good balance of story and characters with the action, they take their time. The new films are roaring action flicks that are great fun for the casual viewer and critic who's never watched Star Trek, but I think a lot of us enjoy the shows for other reasons. Into Darkness and Beyond bring up interesting questions, but between all the action and explosions, they're never truly explored or given the time of day.

With that said, the older films have many flaws of their own too, so even then, I'd put 2009 and Beyond over the majority of the films in my rankings. Into Darkness is harder to gauge just because much of it doesn't really make sense or stand up to analysis, and the last act does get too juiced-up for its own good... but DAMN, does it look great!

I don't live in that world. I think beyond is easily as good as STID. Into Darkness is the more dramatic film, no question but beyond counters heavily with amazing visuals that frankly piss on the first two movies, and a 'trekkieness' that the other two struggle to match. Combine this with the better script and character moments and beyond is right up there, if not better.

The space shots in Beyond look absolutely stunning. I'm surprised they don't get talked about more on here.

I think it's one of the most visually stunning films since avatar.
See, while I thought the effects and beauty shots of the Enterprise and Yorktown were gorgeous, I don't think the cinematography for the rest of the film stood out much. I wasn't a fan of how fast and shaky the action was and a lot of the live-action stuff looked quite dull. With JJ, every shot was a visual spectacle (apart from the overbearing lens flares), so that's why I think the first two films looked better overall.

But, my oh my, did those space shots look good in Beyond.

I'll concede the planet shots didn't look as good but the yorktown, enterprise destruction and climax to the movie were all amazing and superior to anything seen in the first movies in my opinion. I didn't much care for the planet stuff in Beyond, it wasn't alien enough for me.

ST09 - enjoyable enough
STID - eye-rollingly bad, but better than a cut-rate root canal
STB - haven't brought myself to see it yet thanks to STID

And yes, I am a long-time Trek fan who started watching in '66.

Same as you (apart from the watching in 66).
ST09 was enjoyable, more an action Star trek film. Very appealing to non Trek fans as well.
STID was bad, It came across as lazy script writing which was a shame because it could of been so much a better film building up from the last film and oh let's throw in some Klingons.

STID is like the T2/TDK of the trilogy.

Into Dankness was just.... ehh. I would've liked it more if it hadn't gone into some kind of la-la land (not the record company) in the final act. The plot ends when the torpedoes aboard the Vengeance are detonated, they didn't need all that weirdness with the falling Enterprise, warp core kicking and Spock doing the "Khan!" scream (what an epic reference amirite!?!?), culminating in flying garbage trucks and millions of civilians getting murdered left and right.
