2009 widely regarded as good, STID bad, Beyond very good...

Into Dankness was just.... ehh. I would've liked it more if it hadn't gone into some kind of la-la land (not the record company) in the final act. The plot ends when the torpedoes aboard the Vengeance are detonated, they didn't need all that weirdness with the falling Enterprise, warp core kicking and Spock doing the "Khan!" scream (what an epic reference amirite!?!?), culminating in flying garbage trucks and millions of civilians getting murdered left and right.
I dig the final act as it just goes unashamedly 'full TWOK' on crack, with the natural order of events fast tracked/inversed - its like we've had the foreshadow from Spock Prime and then as soon as Khan wakes up from the stun and goes 'full madman Khan' everything WOK gets fast tracked almost as if the prime universe is breaking through as the 3rd villain of the piece and all manner of things are going haywire. so you have viewscreen negotiation/double crossing Khan 'using what he wants against him', Khan alone on the bridge of the hijacked federation ship/attempting to take the enterprise with him/torpedo detonating on board, Enterprise damaged/radiation chamber sacrifice, 'KHAAAN!', storing body in photon tube, and then lastly TSFS resurrection on fast fwd.. even some Space Seed (asphyxiation threat/end fist fight). each element supercharged up and role reversed -Spock instead of Kirk/Kirk instead of Spock..

My appreciation of STID has gone up thanks to BBS. It is trekky b/c of Kirk's refusal to just launch blindly.

BUT the whole role reversal, Spock yelling! Khaaaaan. Just silly. Really took me out of the story. Way out. ymmv

The fact that it plays out like a completely serious moment, even up to the "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!" scream, makes me burst into laughter. The way Quinto twists his face is even more hilarious than Shatner. :guffaw:

Although Spock's "Khaaaaan!" is stupid, I love the anarchic ending to Into Darkness. I thought the reversed death scene was a clever spin on the AU concept. And then all hell breaks loose: Khan loses his shit, Kirk dies, half of San Francisco is levelled, Spock loses his shit, they run and fight... I love it.

I believe he managed to out-shat the Shat.

Oddly enough I feel the same way, it was one homage to far for me. but as you ssay YMMV

I think they've declined steadily. Beyond is the worst of them - certainly the most disappointing, considering that it was written by Simon Pegg.

'09 - Good (if flawed).
STID - O.K.
Beyond - Poor.

Does that mean that you're not expecting much of the next one?

T2 and TDK are superior to their predecessors though.

Now you apologise for saying that about Terminator right now ! There's no excuse for it - I watched T2 again today. It's great, but it's nowhere near Terminator great !

Now if you'd said Aliens was better than Alien, you'd have been spot on....

Does that mean that you're not expecting much of the next one?
Quite the contrary. With the budget slashed they'll have to produce a tight, script heavy, character driven piece with the vfx saved for when they're really needed. Like in Star Trek.:)

I was optimistic about Beyond too...

the reverse death scene in STID just felt too soon for me, kirk and spock were not even best friends up to that point to have what was supposed to be an emotional good bye that was meant to carry the same emotional weight as TOS Kirk and Spock in TOK

The point of the scene in Wrath of Khan was two old friends saying goodbye. The point of the scene in Into Darkness was for Spock to realise what Kirk's friendship was, just as it's snatched away.

Exactly. It's easy to hate on this scene (and I can fully see why people do) but it's all part of a bigger arc for Kirk, and to a slightly lesser degree, Spock. Compare Kirk through the three movies and it's all about him becoming closer to his Prime counterpart with each passing film. I can see how people can't or won't look past the scene, as it's a bit in your face, especially with the scream coming right after it. I still can't quite figure out if it was a ballsy or stupid movie by the production team.

What I don't get is why Spock didn't yell "Nerooooo!!!!" when his entire planet and his mother were destroyed in an instant...

One would think that it would have been at least as upsetting as losing Kirk.

Because the writers saw an opportunity to insert the Khaaaaan scream into the movie. It was a step to far for me. The reactor scene I'm reasonably OK with but the scream was bordering on parody.

agreed.
the scream was contrived and unnecessary.

but what felt even worse was Kirk resurrection after 10 minutes of his death.
