What was the first ST movie you ever saw in theaters?

Generations. I was 6 years old. I saw it with my best friend and his brothers. 22 years later I'm still best friends with the dude and we all watch Star Trek together a few times a year.

 

For sure. When it came out I was 8 years old. I remember being uncomfortable, especially when that needle pressed against Picard's eyeball.

 

First Contact. I'd only got into Trek a couple of years earlier, so that was my first opportunity.

I later saw 5-7 in a cinema as part of a marathon.

 

It's funny how we can't help feeling as if that was done to us. I guess that's really what makes us humans, empathy.

 

It was TMP, at the age of 7, in 1979. We had a theatre that showed movies third-run usually for about 50 cents or a dollar, but would sometimes get first run movies like Star Wars.

TMP was one of those as well, so we were there, December, 1979, to see the movie. It was game over for me after that.

 

Generations, I remember I was in high school and one of my best friends and I cut classes that afternoon to go and see the movie.

 

My two best theater experiences with ST movies were in..STIV and ST09. Saw them both twice. Each time the audiences were packed, very interactive. STIV was pure joy and ST09 it was awe.

 

Going to see a truly great Trek movie with a pumped packed audience is/was such a great experience. Unfortunately when its the opposite (bad movie/small silent audience) its pretty damn depressing

 

The first movie I ever saw was First Contact. In fact it was the first thing in the franchise as well. It's a good too, because it made me want to watch the rest.

 

My first movie was "The Motion Picture" (1979) - I was just this... die-hard, Trekie - had every starship model, every book and blueprints about the Enterprise and the show, you name it, I devoured it. I was 17 when TMP came out. I was in the row of the theater where the screen was my entire field of vision. When Scotty took Kirk over to the spacedock... and they flew past the Enterprise, I literally began weeping at the majesty and beauty of the ship (in GLORIOUS closeup!!!). I felt like I had waited my entire life to see that ship, and I was not disappointed.

I sat through that movie 100+ times that season, and to this day, have no problems sitting through it when I catch it on cable (or put Robert Wise's Directors Cut in the DVD player).

Needless to say, I was MASSIVELY UPSET when Kirk blew up the ship in "Search for Spock". Where my sister came out of the movie weepy that they found and rescued Spock, I came out of the theater feeling like I had been punched in the gut.

 

yes sometimes its easy to forget just what a huge cataclysmic event that was at the time . almost of the level of Spocks death. The ship was effectively the star of the first film and took such a beating in the second the like it never had.

 

...and it took me several YEARS to get over it. I even wrote some personal fan-boy fiction about the self destruct malfunctioning and sending the partially destroyed Enterprise careening off the Genesis Planet atmosphere; shooting wildly into deep space, only to be discovered by Sulu in the Excelsior years later...

Beyond was good story! Good movie!

 

Nemesis when I was 8. I came out of the theater pretty pumped, but now... not so much...

Saw TWOK last year at a special showing in Manchester and as it happens I'm going to a showing of First Contact tonight

 

Star Trek VI at 13 years old.

 

For me it was The Search for Spock. I had seen episodes of the original series and liked it, but I was very young, and thought very strange things about the movie, and ST in general. I didn't quite understand the transporter technology, for one thing. The Enterprise didn't look recognizable to me, at times I knew it was supposed to be the Enterprise, at other times I didn't. I don't think I was able to tell the difference between the Enterprise refit and Excelsior, so the sequence where they steal the Enterprise was confusing. I was very young, BTW. I was puzzled by why the Enterprise looked sooo different...when I recognized it was supposed to be the Enterprise, I was dismayed that they got rid of the "radar" dish on the front of the engineering hull; and it looked to me like it was an open furnace with a blue fire burning in the center of it's insides...it reminded me of that cone shaped Doomsday Machine from the TV episode. I was also convinced that the actor playing Scott was changed for the movie, because Scotty was thin and had dark hair, and did not grow a mustache. When Kruge says to his boarding party, "Their hiding!" I literally believed that was true...and could not quite understand how they were then inexplicably on the planet's surface.

I was still too young to get certain things even when The Voyage Home rolled around, 2 years later. I didn't quite understand that the Enterprise at the end of the movie was a new ship; I thought that Starfleet went back to the Genesis planet, picked up the pieces of the Enterprise, and put her back together for Kirk and his crew. I know, I know: A bit embarrassing to think about, but hopefully someone will get a laugh out the idea.

 

Star Trek II. My dad took me for my ninth birthday.

Since then I've seen every film in the theater except for Star Trek IV (no nearby movie theater where I lived at the time) and Nemesis (I was hugely busy at work that year, and when I had the time it was gone). Star Trek III[/i] I actually saw at a drive-in!
