What are your thoughts about seeing the prime universe again?

How does he honor the movies when they won't have happened for at least another 20 years?

Just for lolz, the crew of Discovery set a bomb on Ceti Alpha 6, and prime it to go off in about...13-ish years?

Personally I'd have preferred a new continuity so they could do whatever they want, but I suspect (with all the talk of "reimagining") that that's what's going to happen anyway.
We already know we've got new uniforms, new ship designs and new aliens. This isn't going to be a New Voyages/Continues-style slavish recreation of TOS. And that's going to send some fans completely bananas.

One of my nation's politicians had a visit with the head of state of a neighboring nation last week. Folks told him it would reassure people, so that's what he did. And then he went right on doing what he wanted to do, which included insulting and threatening that country's nationals. See how it works? ;)

So your argument is that the show's creator and showrunner is like a lying crooked politician who will deceit, slander and fabricate any lie the people want to hear just to get re-elected. Riiiiight. Nice to see you hold Brian Fuller in such high esteem.

BillJ is right - nothing said about this show, nor the little bits shown us so far, appear to be in continuity with any version of Star Trek we've seen before. These are deliberate choices. But the producers have learned that as long as they say "Prime Universe" they can do whatever they think best whether it fits previous continuity or not.

If there was internet back in 1979 and in 1987 your post would fit right in with both TMP and TNG.

But probably you guys have heard more things (other than what I quoted) or seen footage from the show to know that nothing appears to be in continuity with any version of Star Trek we've seen before. Please elaborate and share with the rest of us what you've seen.

The people who said that we'd never see the prime universe ever again and that we should just let it go will never own up and admit that's what they thought and wished.

Yup. Still vindicated. With. Every. Single. Post.

I'm kind of disappointed that they are starting from scratch again, but after having a hard time letting go I can see why. The prequel formula is worse for the writers than Gene's utopian 24th century restrictions. Also, after what I've read of Nicholas Meyer, I have a hard time believing he'd even agree to do a show steeped in the old continuity. Sure, he's just one writer and they have others that are continuity buffs, but Meyer is a bit of a force of nature. Half of his comments in the 50-year mission are apologies for his behavior during ST6. He actually shouted out on the set one day "I'm the one who saved Star Trek!" and Nimoy was present and responded "Oh did you? By yourself?". Meyer said he felt like a tool the second he said it. And now he's making it clear that he's there to keep things grounded and real. I don't see him writing dialog referencing Pike's mission to Talos IV, etc.

The reason I'm disappointed is because it takes a long time for a new Trek show to build up its own history even when it's connected to the larger universe. How are they to avoid the first and second season blues that the other shows made us suffer through, except for TOS. How long will it take for a show to find its voice with a serialized 13 episode season when it's building the universe from scratch.

If they able to break that "curse", I'm fine with whatever they do.

We've seen an unfinished version of the captain's chair. Looks more Abramsverse than Prime universe. We've seen early renders of Discovery, complete with movie style deflector dish in the front. We know from Fuller that women will be able to be captain's, which directly contradicts "Turnabout Intruder".

Sooo... it isn't exactly trying to stay in line with TOS.

You don't really address anything here; this is just "still beating your wife?" rhetoric.

You've clearly read enough about the show to know that we skeptics are right about the extent to which Discovery will deviate, over time, from the expectations of "Prime Universe" devotees, and you'll see it week by week. It's going to be far less of a fit to previous Trek TV shows than, say, Enterprise was.

Yeah, I too feel like it will only be the prime universe in broad strokes only, as some people in here have said.

Yep.

"Prime Universe" is term to be used as a security blanket; that's why they're saying it. "Not in the nuTrek movie continuity" is a more accurate description of what they've decided.

Does anyone think that if we see a character affected by Delta Rays, they'll be stuck in a chair going "beep"?

Or a cgi character? The actor would wear those green body suits with the white dots the whole time.

No, Pike would probably be more like Hawking. There's an idea.
They should make Stephan Hawking a guest captain of another starship.

No. Maybe a scientist or Admiral affected by neurological disease. But a captain? That's just pushing a bit far.
or delta rays. But why not captain. He might be one of the fleet's best tacticians or something (not smartest in the quadrant which would make Starfleet limiting for him).
Sure he can't punch anyone (unless you factor in Simpsons continuity) but he could have a specialized command crew to offset his disability. That would be progressive.

If he's good, then a higher level position for him is probably better for Starfleet.

If we're talking about Hawking as he currently is, then he would be too slow to communicate with his crew during crisis.
