Spoilers Star Trek:Discovery Uniforms Sneak Peak

My god, speaking as 26 year old who grew up on star trek ,If you use the TOS uniforms in 2016 NO ONE except trekkies will take the show serioisly

And yet JJTrek showed that the aesthetic of the TOS uniforms can be updated and given a level of detail that looks very good on contemporary movie screens and HD TVs. And I don't think anyone can claim that only trekkies take these movies seriously.

One more thing Beyond has shown us is that the TOS uniforms can be updated and look amazing in 2016.

And these are just replicas. Why not go for a similar updated look?

As a 25 year old, I don't think the Cage/ TOS uniforms look dated. I've seen people in basic sweatshirts that look like the Cage tunic. Bright colored sweater and black slacks. That's pretty current with today's fashion. And as some have mentioned above, updating it wouldn't hurt either.

They're almost too utilitarian to actually get dated, aside from the flared legs & build quality.

They're wearing doc martin boots, or something indistinguishable from Doc Martins, which will not go out of fashion until I stop noticing boys in black eyeliner moping about, when I'm waiting for my bus.

Only children don't believe in timelessness.

Unless the Discovery is trialling a potential new uniform for the fleet then they pretty much have to use those seen in "The Cage", less they screw up continuity and anger many, many fans

I highly doubt they will use the Cage designs, or anything close. And yes, they will upset the continuity apple cart a bit because the new stories have to speak to these times, and then somehow loosely connect to the stories from the 60's. DSC is beginning of new continuity. They'll take what worked, and update the rest.

Well, Fuller keeps saying it over and over in various ways, so...

And it's a certainty that they're not using TOS or TOS-pilot uniforms. The emblem, however, will be a pin shaped like the ubiquitous Trek chevron.

They don't "have" to do a damn thing. If they use a completely new uniform design, it'll just confirm that there are MANY different uniforms in use in Starfleet - which is also the case in most real world militaries.

Or, they use any uniform design they please, and then not really care that much when some fans complain that it screws up continuity.

ubiquitous Trek chevron.

You know that that started with the movies.

In TOS, the chest emblem was ship specific.

Only the Crew of Enterprise wore the Chevrons, and other ships, their crew had different emblems to signify which Star Ship that they were from.

(The writing is a little small. Sorry)

:)

Enterprise in 2001ish "chose" to ignore this facet of uniform design, I'm guessing Discovery will as well.

To be honest I have never really liked most of the uniforms we've seen on Trek. My favourites have been the TOS movie ones. They at least look like proper uniforms. I just wish they had kept the rank stripes.

But of the ones we've seen on TV I have always been partial to the Pike era uniforms, so if Fuller really intends to skip that design I'm a little saddened. I think an updated version of those could work pretty well (better material, more elaborate insignias, more variety in terms of jackets etc.) even in our time. Now I'll just hope that whatever he chooses won't be too radically different. But I'll of course withhold final judgement until I actually see them.

Well, first...that wasn't absolutely so. Crewpeople from other ships appeared on TOS wearing the chevron; it wasn't consistent.

Secondly, that bit of trivial disappeared from the Trek continuity from 1979 until the Mirror episodes of Enterprise, and no one will pay any attention to it.

Opps. Here we go again.
I should be clear that I meant visually, not story-wise. They will never throw out 50 years of high quality storytelling. In terms of story the show will exist next to, not in spite of what's come before. Only the look will go.

Potato tomato. If you don't want to use the visuals of a particular era and Star Trek then why set your show in that era?

"Our podunky widdle ship has touchscreens and fancy clothes. But you know, one of the twelve greatest starships in the fleet is still using paper print-outs. Because, you know, modern audiences.

Because the era isn't some tightly crafted design that was meant to endure. It was the best they could do at the time and at that budget. The best they can do now is what we are going to see.
