Spoilers Star Trek:Discovery Uniforms Sneak Peak

Yes, we can imagine styles (hair, clothing, etc.) reappearing after being absent for a long time.

That's why I don't have a problem with sixties hair styles in Kirk's era.

I think saying JNCOs were a thing might be stretching it a bit. I can only remember the gang bangers and goths wearing them. So that was, like, five people.

My problem was watching Shatner's hair evolve into seventies Elvis by late season 3.

If their hair care was regulated by Star Fleet Regulation, or a hair cut machine, the change in hair style by a 35 year old man, who is not paying attention to modes of fashion, was probably a sign that he was cracking under the pressure.

Did anyone notice the "retro" hairstyles that the NX-01 crew were sporting in ENT? Archer and Tucker in particular had conservative hairstyles that wouldn't have looked out of place in the '60s (if not the '50s).

I would categorize Trip and Archer's hairstyles as conservative more than "retro". Pretty much all the male leads (playing humans) of all the trek shows have hairstyles that would fit in in the 60's.

What you wore was not the exact same thing the actors wore, apparently. Robert Beltran cited the costumes as being extremely tight (and uncomfortably so) around the shoulders, neck, & waist and that they were prone to giving actors atomic wedgies when simply kneeling or squatting. Garrett Wang split his uniform more than a few times during the run of VOY. When Michael Dorn had to deliver a line in DS9 in which Worf was lauding about the comfort of his uniform, that was really some serious acting on his part.
Wow, I didn't realize those were that uncomfortable. These are the black jumpsuits with the colored shoulders right? Did things get any better with the black and grey ones?

Yep. The ones that first appeared in DS9 and then later used throughout VOY.

I think those First Contact uniforms were slightly better for the actors, but it was still more a Hollywood issue of appearances taking priority over comfort. The female uniforms, however, became even more formfitting and were essentially catsuits compared to the male uniforms.

The TNG cast had very '80s hairstyles, and the VOY cast hairstyles are looking more and more like late 1990s/early 2000s coifs.

Are you referring to the women's hairstyles? Because the men's hair was all pretty tame. It's not like anyone in TNG was rocking a mullet or anyone in DS9 or Voyager were wearing grunge locks.

Sideburns filed to a point seems like a fake hair style invented for TOS which carried on through the subsequent series.

Those are extremes, of course, but Riker's hair was rather puffed, and LaForge was rocking what was called "a box" that was popular among African-American males during the '80s. Even though it took awhile to settle on a hair style for Janeway, they eventually ended up with a '90s "corporate power bob". Kim also was a victim of excessive hair gel cream, a disease that has fortunately been gradually moderating over the last fifteen years.

And there were a few mullets here and there in TNG, but mostly by extras on various planets.

My guess is we are looking at a total visual do-over with very little of the old design surviving. We older fans can't sustain TV Trek for the next 50 years. They need the young people to bond with TV Trek for its ability to speak to the human condition, and not get hung up on design that looks like it's from their father's or [choke] grandfather's time. TV Trek is too important in its ability to inspire tolerance and understanding of different cultures to risk the young dismissing it out of hand because it looks old-fashioned to them. I love the old stuff and it will always be there, but I'm also a Bryan Fuller fan and can't wait to see what he comes up. He's a world-builder. Compare the original Munsters to the Mockingbird Lane pilot he did a couple years back. Nothing to do with Trek and NBC passed on the pilot (some irony there), but look what he built on top of the original simplistic concept. That may give us an idea of what to expect.

If you are including the women, extras, and gueststars, I can agree with that. But that's not my original statement.

Actually those were purple WIGS in UFO. Whenever the moonbase girls came down to earth (literally), they had their actual hair on display, not the wigs. I read that Sylvia Anderson ( co-showrunner and costumer designer ) said that the popularity of wigs in the late 60's made her think they might become part of the uniforms in the future, for both women and men. Polish those boots, tuck in your shirt, and adjust your wig, mister. You're on duty!
