Spoilers Star Trek:Discovery Uniforms Sneak Peak

Trek has stayed pretty close to the 50s/60s in terms of men's hairstyles - but that's not unusual in the U.S. in many institutional and conservative spheres of activity from the military to banking. Women's hairstyles in Trek have more closely reflected the times in which the shows were made.

Connor Trineer did talk once about getting used to the haircut he was required to have in order to play Tucker. "I like a little more loft," was what he said.

Just whipped this up. It doesn't take much to turn the uniforms from Beyond into a perfectly acceptable Pilot era uniform.
On the subject of hairstyles, anything is good as long as it doesn't date the show. That's why timeless, conservative hairstyles make the most sense.

Well, I wouldn't suggest literally modifying the movie uniforms to become TV uniforms, but I think something along these lines would work design-wise and material-wise. Paramount doesn't have exclusive rights to primary colored shirts, after all.

Literally that's exactly what used to happen when the movies and TV where made by the same people. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

#Handmedowns.

Pre-replcators, their "uniforms" would be cleaned in a laundry and extremely sterilized after returning from an unknown alien environment.

I doubt the colours would still pop even after a 2 year mission.

They may not be able to replicate clothing magically like in TNG, but what about a textile fabricator? Endless fee reams of fabric, but they'd still need tailors to to turn that fabric into Uniforms/clothing.

In the Andromeda Strain, they wore paper overalls colour coded to each floor, that had to be burnt and replaced as they moved from airlocked floor to airlocked floor.

Realistically if the uniforms have to be washed, the ship has to double in size, or half the ship is already a laundry, and it's a serious argument for shipboard nudity %90 of the time when you consider that everything you own is washed in a suspension of recycled urine.

Sonic cleaning facilities for clothing? I believe in TNG times uniforms are recycled and made in the Replicators.

Actually those were purple WIGS in UFO. Whenever the moonbase girls came down to earth (literally), they had their actual hair on display, not the wigs. I read that Sylvia Anderson ( co-showrunner and costumer designer ) said that the popularity of wigs in the late 60's made her think they might become part of the uniforms in the future, for both women and men. Polish those boots, tuck in your shirt, and adjust your wig, mister. You're on duty!

Was there ever a reason given on the show for WHY they wore those wigs? What practical value did they have?

Not on the show and that's part of what I love about the Andersons' scifi. They came at scifi from a drastically different angle than Trek giving us another avenue to think about. British drama was more complex than American at the time (and even today), but at the same time they didn't assemble a dream team of scifi writers like Trek did, and their head guy (Gerry) was more like a George Lucas than a Gene Roddenberry.

There have been fan made attempts for an in universe explanation. Like protection from electromagnetism and radiation. But male Moonbase personnel didn't wear any.
Wellll, Paul Foster did after about his fourth or fifth episode, but that was more out of need :). Straker also wore one after the first or second ep because the hair dye was hard on his hair. But only the women had them as part of the uniform.

Indeed they were. I'd like to think that it would help my sloppiness if I had a replicator, but I can't shake the vision of my replicator clogged with dirty clothes and dishes, and Rom having to come fix it weekly

Still too close to the original IMHO. Remember this is Bryan Fuller, so we're almost assured a pattern in the shirt even more noticeable than in the JJverse prior to Beyond. Also, based on his other shows, he already has his own ideas in terms of color and contrast....and world-building in general. Think Tuvix but not so loud.

Wasn't Straker's white hair itself a wig?
Not in the first episode. They dyed his hair and styled it like that. When the series got going, they realized that was no gonna work, so he got a wig. Paul got his a few episodes later, but he got his because of hair loss. The show was not ALL about visuals, but they were important, and Paul's combover wasn't cutting it. To be clear, I'm not mocking him. I'd take his combover in a heartbeat if it meant I could have looked like him. He was an impressive individual and competent actor. And for some weird trivia, he and Straker died within like 10 days of each other in 2006 I believe.
I can't believe I'm talking UFO! I loved this show in a vacuum for 30+ years.

^^ I watched that show religiously when it was on the air. I've got the DVDs, too.

I seem to remember something in one of the novels about anti-static wigs on Moobase personnel, but of course it was just justification-- they were there to look cool.
